Paradise Valley Hospital is the South Bay’s oldest hospital, the second oldest hospital in all of San Diego County, and the largest employer in National City. It has served San Diego faithfully for more than 100 years and offers a range of programs and services, including a 291‑bed acute care hospital, the San Diego Spine & Joint Center, an acute rehabilitation center, Paradise Health & Senior Center, a modern cardiac catheterization lab, comprehensive inpatient and outpatient surgical services, 24‑hour emergency services, and behavioral health services on both the hospital and Bayview campuses.

Responsibilities
  • Functions as the department Section Supervisor or Lead, supervising daily operations.
  • Provides consultative services to the medical staff as Technical Consultant.
  • Oversees the section/department performance improvement program and participates in hospital interdisciplinary initiatives.
  • Responsible for the technical and fiscal management of the section(s).
  • Oversees the section(s) quality management/assurance program.
  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory and accreditation requirements.
  • Assesses staff competency and completes performance evaluations in a timely manner.
  • Ensures the accuracy of patient results before releasing or reporting.
  • Develops, maintains and updates section policy and procedure manuals.
  • Reviews quality control performance, documenting corrective actions for deviations from established performance specifications.
  • Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance and notifies the Director or Medical Director immediately.
  • Performs a wide variety of laboratory procedures requiring independent judgment across multiple disciplines such as Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, and Immunology.
  • Ensures the performance and documentation of equipment maintenance (daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed).
  • Recognizes age‑specific differences in expected results for newborns to geriatrics.
  • Ensures proficiency testing samples are processed in the same manner as patient samples and that reporting follows regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures currency of all laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Adheres to all department and hospital policies related to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources.
  • May be assigned responsibilities related to LIS and/or POC.
  • Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned by the department manager or director.
Qualifications

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING

  • ASCP certification or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum five years of hospital laboratory work experience required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in chemical, physical, biological science, or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or other educational requirements as stated in CLIA.
  • Possession of a current and valid state Clinical Laboratory Scientist license.
Pay Transparency

Paradise Valley Hospital offers competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package, including paid time off, a 401(k) retirement plan, medical, dental, and vision coverage, tuition reimbursement, and many voluntary benefit options. The estimated starting compensation for this role ranges from $43.04 to $62.49 per hour.
