The successful applicant will primarily manage the oral and cutaneous cancer patient clinics. They will be responsible for all aspects of the operative care of their patients. In addition to head and neck cancer expertise, the post holder is expected to provide a general service on call and be experienced in the management of maxillofacial trauma. The department operates a hub and spoke model and this post is primarily based at the Glan Clwyd Hospital site, however, there may be times where the post holder may be required to attend other hospital sites across the Health Boards geographical landscape.

The post holder will be expected to be involved in all aspects of the department's work, including teaching, audit, elective care and trauma care. It is anticipated that the surgeon will spend the equivalent of at least three sessions a week in the operating theatre and two sessions a week in outpatient clinics. In addition, there will be administrative, management, clinical governance, and supporting professional activity duties.

They will work closely with clinical colleagues, nursing and other allied health care professionals in order to enhance the level of patient care in the Health Board. The final allocation of patient contact time, including theatre, and clinics, will be agreed upon in discussion with the Clinical Lead / Clinical Director.

  • Supervise and manage the work of non-consultant doctors and specialist nursing staff working within the Department.
  • Take responsibility for the professional supervision and appraisal of junior medical staff, in conjunction with colleagues.
  • Co-operating and liaising with clinical governance committees and leads, as appropriate and developing a programme of continuing personal professional education and development within available resources and in line with the workload and priorities of the service.
  • Attending and contributing to the Health Board's Clinical Governance Programme, including the Health Board's Clinical Incident Reporting systems, Adverse Incident Policy, and other umbrella policies.
