The Cape Cod Times, part of Gannett Inc. and the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a digitally savvy journalist to be our next cops and courts reporter covering impactful news for our readers.
In addition to Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket residents, our readership extends throughout New England and beyond.
The cops and courts reporter will cover the police beat, public safety and criminal and civil cases related to Cape Cod in state trial courts and federal courts. The position calls for an organized reporter who will be tracking and planning coverage of cases as they proceed through the courts. In this beat, the reporter will be talking to attorneys, police, bar associations, and district attorneys.
The ideal candidate will be masterful at turning around a quick story as well as having the creativity of a storyteller. We are looking for a reporter who will break news and balance daily reporting alongside longer-term reporting based on data analysis, public records and interviews.
The courts and cops reporter could be asked to cover general assignment stories as well.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- High-level writing, communication and time management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work well on deadline and collaborate with newsroom staff.
- Ability to produce content that is engaging, clean, accurate and publication ready.
- Comfort with using social media to enhance reporting and promote stories.
- Understanding of reporting ethics and sourcing.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
