Job Overview

Operate a commercial motor vehicle safely, courteously, and professionally. Maintain compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and local regulations and company policies and procedures. Provide on-time delivery of undamaged freight to customers.

Typical Duties of a Feed Driver
  • Safely operates a company-owned and provided commercial motor vehicle.
  • Effectively communicates with dispatch as required.
  • Physically meets the demands of required duties as described in the Physical Requirements section of this Job Profile.
  • Inspects the truck/trailers for any defects that may affect the safe operation of the unit. Inspections include pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections as well as reviews during operation.
  • Report any defects or problems with the truck/trailers to the appropriate individuals.
  • Maintains all required paperwork associated with each particular load.
  • Review paperwork to determine the nature of the load, customer location, and delivery route and to ensure that the delivery time corresponds with dispatch instructions.
  • Ensures the proper preparation of hazardous waste manifest. Operates pickup/trailer in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations regarding hours of service.
  • Complies with all company and customer requirements on using personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Properly maintains all records required by the company and governmental agencies, such as drivers’ logs, fuel receipts, mileage records, scale tickets, repair receipts, etc.
  • Report all accidents and/or work‑related injuries (regardless of severity) to the appropriate manager, including the Safety Team.
  • Maintains proper communication with the manager on status.
  • Maintains compliance with all other applicable Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations not listed above.
  • Drivers may spend 10% to 30% of their time out of doors exposed to potentially difficult environmental conditions.
  • Drivers may be subject to irregular work schedules, temperature and weather extremes, long trips, short notice for trip assignments, tight delivery schedules, route delays, and other stresses related to driving a large commercial motor vehicle on crowded streets and highways in all kinds of weather.
  • Drivers typically spend 80 to 90% of on‑duty time in the truck.
  • While driving, operators are exposed to noise and vibration levels that may be higher than those typically experienced in passenger cars.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    High School Diploma or G.E.D. is required along with a Class “A” CDL Operator License and DOT Physical.
  • Experience:

    1 year minimum of driving experience is required.
  • Knowledge of:
    Bio‑security precautions relating to pork production facilities and driving/hauling equipment.
  • Skill in:
    Operating pickup/trailer in bad weather, hazardous driving conditions, and poor roads; hooking/unhooking various commercial pickup/trailer units, raising and lowering the landing gear, operating the 5th wheel release lever, opening, and closing tailgates and fuel vehicles, and checking engine oil and coolants; climbing ladders of different designs to access locations on the pickup and trailer; manually handling material and equipment requires a lifting/handling force up to 50‑75 pounds.
  • Ability to:
    Sit and remain alert while driving for an aggregate period of up to 11 hours without a 10‑hour break; perform occasional squatting, kneeling, bending, and climbing while inspecting truck equipment and loaded materials; properly enter and exit the vehicle’s cab 10 to 20 times per day, with assistance of handholds and steps; use a shovel to move and/or level a load;

    occasionally reach above shoulder level, at waist level, and below waist level for maneuvering controls; spend at least 10% of the day standing and 10% walking on surfaces such as concrete, wood, metal, sometimes on slippery and wet surfaces.
Compensation and Benefits

Targeted pay range of $21.50–$29.94 USD per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
