- Plan and implement specific work plans to meet Tribal environmental goals, including budget control and contract compliance.
- Research and ensure compliance with all grant administrative requirements, assess compliance, and document findings.
- Submit required quarterly progress reports to the EPA and jointly evaluate grant accomplishments with the agency.
- Monitor and manage the solid waste transfer station to ensure compliance with EPA regulations.
- Attend training sessions, meetings and become involved in local, regional and national environmental coalitions.
- Coordinate meetings with the National Tribal Environmental Council, Nevada Environmental Coalition, etc.
- Oversight and planning for proper actions to address issues at mine sites on or near the Reservation.
- Collect data to support completion of the Tribe's Environmental Management Plan.
- Continue oversight of plans for proper actions related to transportation of high‑level nuclear waste and elemental mercury through the Reservation.
- Review, monitor and update the nuclear waste emergency plan; update training and keep informed of nuclear waste issues affecting the Tribe.
- Conduct an environmental inventory of the reservation to identify all potential pollution sources and collect baseline data on waters, soil, etc.
- Develop positive relations with regulatory, governmental, and granting agencies and Tribal environmental departments.
- Keep abreast of current trends and information in the field of environmental regulations.
- Conduct environmental research, data collection, testing and assessments.
- Prepare and review environmental reports required by EPA.
- Represent the Walker River Paiute Tribe at local, regional, and national environmental meetings, groups, and organizations.
- Develop specific program education and outreach materials for environmental issues.
- Seek sources for additional funds for future environmental projects and write grants.
- Maintain grant files and monitor grant budgets.
- Prepare the framework, presentation and communication of environmental issues to the local tribal government and members.
- Submit grant applications for the GAP, Superfund, and Brownfields Grants annually and for any additional grants secured by the Environmental Manager.
- Keep separate timecards and activity sheets for each grant charged.
- Demonstrate knowledge of Grants.gov and GAP Online.
- Carry out other work as needed.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and have knowledge of Tribal governments, roles, and responsibilities.
- Ability to exercise mature judgment, confidentiality, and responsible decision‑making in accordance with established policies and procedures of the Walker River Paiute Tribe.
- Ability to demonstrate excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Have initiative to complete goals and objectives of contracts.
- Computer literacy with experience in word processing (Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.).
- Working knowledge of basic environmental and scientific principles of air, water, soil, and their role in an ecosystem.
- Familiarity with the Federal Codes of Regulation (CFR) in air, water, solid waste and hazmat.
- High school graduate or GED equivalent.
- Preferred:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in environmental science, hydrology, earth science, life science, or related fields; and/or two to three (2–3) years of demonstrated experience in an environmental field. - Must have a valid Nevada Driver's License and be eligible for Tribe insurance coverage.
- Must successfully pass a background check.
