Overview

Under direction from the Undersheriff and/or Sheriff; supervise, assign, review and participate in the work of deputies and technical staff responsible for providing detention, patrol, investigations, jail control room operation and civil service duties within the Sheriff’s Office.

This is a supervisory level responsible for assigned shifts, staff of major functional and geographical areas. Sergeants regularly perform patrol, detention and investigation duties of a Deputy Sheriff. This class is distinguished from the Deputy Sheriff/Corporal and Detective classes by the requirement for supervision of lower ranking Deputies and personnel and a term of experience within the department.

Any combination of training, education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to gain the required knowledge and ability is:

  • Must have a minimum of five (5) years of full-time, paid public law enforcement experience, including:
  • At least one (1) year as a Storey County Sheriff’s Office Deputy, successfully completing probationary period or;
  • Lateral candidates may be considered if they:
    • Are currently qualified for promotion within their agency, or
    • Hold the rank of Sergeant or above at another Nevada law enforcement agency.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Military experience applicable to the duties of this position may be preferred.
  • Must pass a thorough background investigation and be:
    • Free from any felony convictions.
    • Free from any misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude.
    • Free from an excessive number of traffic citations.
  • Experience in patrol, detention, and investigative duties is highly desirable.

Required Certifications, Licenses and Registration:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Nevada driver's license.
  • Must possess and maintain Nevada Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Category I certification throughout employment.
  • Must possess and maintain Nevada Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Intermediate or higher within two (2) years of employment.
  • Successful completion of a First Line Supervision Course or equivalent is required within one (1) year of appointment if not already held. Equivalency will be determined at the discretion of the Sheriff.

The duties listed below are examples of the work typically performed by an employee in this position. Performance of these functions is the reason the job exists. An employee may not be assigned all duties listed and may be assigned duties which are not listed below.

  • Develop staff schedules; organizes work to be done by staff; assigns duties to individual officers or personnel; coordinates activities of staff to ensure effective coverage and prompt response; trains staff in law enforcement methods, application of policies, procedures and use of law enforcement equipment; reviews and evaluates performance.
  • Reviews assigned staff reports to assure work quality, timely accomplishment and to ensure they are consistent with policies and procedures.
  • Provides leadership, direction and coaching to subordinate employees in the areas of performance management, problem resolution and work assignments, issues warnings and reprimands for inadequate performance and improper behavior.
  • Patrol functions, patrols an assigned area to detect and prevent illegal activities; responds to occurrences by observing and apprehending, detaining and questioning, arresting, and transporting criminal suspects; handles sensitive, emotionally charged, and/or potentially explosive confrontations to preserve or restore peace.
  • Investigation of crimes; identifies suspects and their whereabouts; conducts interviews of victims and witnesses and interrogations of suspects; searches for, seizes and preserves evidence and protects the crime scene; documents steps of investigation; testifies in court; uses specialized investigative techniques, including undercover operations, to develop a prosecutable case.
  • Prepares information for presentation in court and makes presentations in court; studies the details of a case; assembles and organizes needed documentation; orally presents information requested in meetings and court appearances.
  • Intake activities: searches incoming detainees for removal of valuables and contraband; inventories property for secure keeping; fingerprints and photographs detainees.
  • Transportation activities: transports detainees; keeps records of dates of appearances and communicates with judges and court staff; maintains security during court appearances.
  • Maintains operational proficiencies; stays abreast of the latest information relevant to assignments and areas of responsibility.
  • Provides instruction and training: formally and informally orients new personnel to their work environment; formally present a body of knowledge to students in classroom settings.
  • Performs deputy coroner functions.
