CDOC - Criminal Investigator IV; Statewide

Position Summary

Colorado Department of Corrections – Office of the Inspector General – Investigative Officer (Full Time)

Only Colorado state residents are eligible. The OIG is the chief criminal investigative and audit agency of the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC). The investigator will conduct independent criminal and administrative investigations in correctional facilities, prepare legal documents and support state law‑enforcement agencies.

Applicants must live within one hour of the assigned facility and be available for 24‑hour on‑call duty year‑round. The position requires a valid Colorado POST certification and a background investigation.

• Conduct investigations of offender and employee misconduct, including violations of state statutes, federal laws, and administrative regulations.
• Investigate Title VII discrimination, sexual harassment, use‑of‑force allegations, and other significant employee misconduct.
• Coordinate facility drug interdict ions and provide matrix supervision of assigned staff.
• Interview suspects, victims, witnesses, and confidential sources.
• Lead field investigations, assign tasks to investigative personnel and law‑enforcement officers.
• Prepare investigative reports, legal pleadings, warrants, affidavits, and submit to prosecuting agencies and supervisory authorities.
• Conduct surveillance, supervise undercover operations, and assist other agencies in CDOC‑related cases.
• Analyze complaints, validate elements that constitute a crime under Colorado statutes.
• Inventory and secure seized items, create exhibits for court proceedings.
• Testify in administrative hearings, depositions, and other legal settings.
• Perform other investigative tasks as required, including K9 operations and training duties.

• Eight (8) years of full‑time professional investigative experience in drug, assault, or fraud investigations.
• Experience must include interviewing suspects/victims/witnesses, collecting evidence, writing reports, and testifying in hearings and trials.
• Colorado POST certification (POST certificate must be uploaded).
• Valid driver’s license; maintain a safe driving record.
• High school diploma or GED.
• No felony convictions and no history of sexual or violent behavior as per CDOC policy.
• Eligible to work in the United States.

• K9 drug investigations experience.
• Gang‑related and intelligence‑gathering investigations.
• Multiagency and professional standards/IA investigations.

• Independent criminal and administrative investigation skills.
• Knowledge of federal, state, and local statutes and regulations.
• Extensive knowledge of Colorado Criminal Law.
• Strong written and oral communication; excellent negotiation and public speaking skills.
• Exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Strong interview and interrogation skills; ability to handle stressful situations.
