Essential Functions- Prepares and presents evidence in civil actions and/or juvenile prosecutions; counsels colleagues on legal strategies and legal issues; conducts preliminary evaluation of the case.
- Performs legal research and studies, interprets and applies laws, court decisions and legal points and authorities for use in preparation of cases, opinions and briefs.
- Confers with and advises County officials, employees, and representatives on legal questions; drafts ordinances, resolutions and other legislative measures; represents the County in cases initiated by or against the County; confers with investigations regarding the collection of facts and evidence.
- Attends evidentiary hearings and trials; prepares legal instruments, correspondence and reports.
- Attends board meetings and other meetings at various locations, including some meetings outside of the County.
- Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the department's services by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
- Maintains accurate records and files; prepares a variety of records and reports as assigned.
- Prepares and reviews various types of contracts involving the County; reviews and/or drafts policies and procedures as required.
- Uses standard office equipment, including a computer in the performance of work.
- Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
- Experience in real property, land use, planning and zoning law preferred.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and Experience- Juris Doctorate in Law and admitted to the State Bar of Nevada AND a minimum of five (5) years of experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Applicants who do not possess a Nevada Bar license, but have been admitted to practice law in another state, may qualify to practice law in Nevada on a limited basis as a Deputy District Attorney pursuant to Nevada Supreme Court Rule 49.1.

- Judicial procedure and rules of evidence.
- Applicable laws, codes and regulations.
- Computer applications, particularly as related to the performance of legal research.
- Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
- Principles, methods, materials and practices of legal research.
- Standard office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment.
- Communicating effectively in oral and written forms.
- Techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals from various socio‑economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, in person and over the telephone.
- Understanding and interpreting constitutional provisions, statutes, administrative regulations and precedents.
- Researching, interpreting, applying, and explaining applicable laws, codes, regulations and court decisions.
- Training staff in process and procedures.
- Using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.
- Maintaining accurate records of work performed.
- Compiling and summarizing information and preparing periodic or special reports.
- Organizing own work, setting priorities and meeting critical deadlines.
