WSP is initiating a search for a Senior Substation Physical Designer for our Columbus, OH office. Be involved in projects with our Power Delivery Substation Team and join a growing organization that meets client objectives and solves challenges.
Responsibilities- Collect, compile, and analyze data from the physical work site, surveys, structural concepts, blueprints, schematics, and verbal or written specifications to support drafting and design activities.
- Use 3D CADD software and collaborate with engineers to resolve design details and prepare accurate drawings.
- Provide technical design assistance following industry standards for accuracy, functionality, and constructability.
- Act as a consultant on work progress and problem resolution; serve as the primary Drafting/Design Support resource on moderate‑scope projects.
- Verify accuracy of calculations, designs, and contract specifications, and resolve technical issues.
- Work with cross‑functional teams and ensure designs meet client standards, requests, and federal regulations.
- Prepare multiple design versions for engineer review and monitor drafting plans to ensure quality control and contract compliance.
- Provide guidance and training to entry‑level drafting and design support staff.
- Maintain current knowledge of drafting and design support tools and practices.
- Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- High School Diploma.
- Minimum 9 years of relevant post‑education experience with drafting and design support.
- Proficient in CADD software, including Micro Station and/or AutoCAD, and parametric tools such as Inventor, Solid Works, or Revit.
- Strong knowledge of drafting principles, codes, and compliance practices.
- Ability to perform technical calculations involving geometry and mathematics.
- Analytical mindset with sound judgement in evaluating situations.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, effective with technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Self‑leadership, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize responsibilities.
- Proficient in technical writing, office automation, software, and spreadsheets.
- Track record of workplace safety and compliance with health, safety, and harassment policies.
- Ability to work project‑specific schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Occasional travel may be required.
- Bachelor’s Degree in a closely related discipline.
- Professional licensure or certification.
