Charge Nurse Responsibilities
- Compliance with Joint Commission, DPH, DMH, and other regulatory agencies.
- Assure patient care meets best practice standards.
- Ensure compliance with governing regulations and payor guidelines.
- Ensure compliance with High Point policies and procedures.
- Participate in recruitment, hiring, promotion, training, and evaluation of nursing staff.
- Assist in developing nursing and medication records for each patient.
- Review and make recommendations regarding policies and procedures.
- Report to Infection Control Committee as needed.
- Assist in monitoring inventory, ordering medications and equipment for daily operation.
- Schedule nurses to maintain adequate staffing patterns.
- Manage call outs and staff supervision.
- Audit narcotic books; hold staff accountable.
- Assess unit acuity and provide direct patient care as needed.
- Review incident reports and restraint documentation; ensure accurate completion.
- Supervise nursing personnel per HPAO supervision policy.
- Maintain and update nursing policies and procedures manual.
- Maintain infection control data and oversee OSHA compliance.
- Participate in required committee meetings.
- Ensure proper disposal of medications.
- Monitor active and inactive EHR records for correct documentation.
- Assist in development and monitoring of group schedule.
- Encourage nursing participation in education opportunities.
- Attend monthly Director of Nursing meetings and hold unit meetings.
- Provide patient education groups or designate another RN/LPN as needed.
- Ensure patient plan of care is updated after crisis intervention; debriefing after restraints/code green.
- Use standard precautions at all times.
- Demonstrate recognition of patient rights; attend facility meetings and conferences.
- Attend mandatory training to update knowledge base and enhance professional growth.
- Other duties as assigned by Nurse Manager, Program Director, etc.
- Experience in a Behavioral Health and/or Substance Use Disorder treatment setting.
- Two years? supervisory experience recommended.
- Professional, courteous presentation at all times.
- Flexibility and ability to perform multiple tasks.
- Excellent communication skills; ability to organize ideas logically.
- Basic computer skills; familiarity with HPAO electronic medical records; ability to learn, use and train others.
- Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with others.
- Understanding of the relationship between substance use and mental health issues, and/or self‑help programs.
- Understanding of boundaries and ethics.
- Compliance with Federal Regulations, 42 CFR Part 2, Confidentiality of Alcohol Abuse Policy and HIPAA Regulations; TB screening.
- Certification in the HPAO approved de‑escalation program.
- CPR Certification.
- Licensed Registered Nurse in Massachusetts.
- BS in Nursing preferred.
- Experience in a behavioral health care and/or substance use preferred.
