Job Description:

The Traveling Field Engineer is responsible for managing field logistics and updating company project managers and contractors to ensure mission critical projects comply with all engineering standards, codes and specifications. The position works with Project Managers and Superintendents to provide direction and support in managing operations, overseeing the logistics of the job, and generating reports for division leaders.

A Day in the Life
  • Manages plan grid and heavy job for project work accuracy, monitor projects costs to stay within budget.
  • Prepares, reviews, and approves supplier purchase orders.
  • Understands the owner contract and subcontract documents to understand inclusions/exclusions for invoice payment.
  • Validates, reconciles, and maintains accurate quantities for billing purposes and communicates differences to project management.
  • Identifies out of scope work for the purpose of change orders.
  • Produces drafts, manages and maintains project submittal/RFI/logs for lead project manager.
  • Schedules, facilitates and manages Gopher 1 tickets.
  • Schedules and leads private utility meetings and documents conversations to communicate with office personnel.
  • Prepares change orders, manages trucking logs and invoice approval.
  • Performs on-site safety observations.
  • Identifies, completes, and applies for local permits.
  • Attends meetings as required with clients, owners and project teams.
  • Develops and maintains good working relationships with client, subcontractor, vendors, land-owners, suppliers, etc.
  • Oversees job site‑specific requirements relating to safety, site cleanliness, delivery schedules, etc.
  • Organizes and ensures proper documentation and drawing distribution to staff and field personnel.
  • Assists in the production and processing of project deliverables such as Safety and QA/QC plans, and test procedures.
  • Assists in drafting subcontractor/P.O agreements and ensures all subcontract agreements are finalized before work begins.
  • Plans and coordinates the engineering deliverables from various parties.
  • Independently performs tasks assigned with instructions for expected general results.
  • Tracks production to produce project activity profiles.
  • Proactively works with Project Management, Field Supervisory, and Client teams to identify and analyze potential risks and impacts to the project schedule.
  • Assists with job site duties to keep facilities functioning correctly.
  • Assists with Estimating duties including take-offs, solicitations to subcontractors/suppliers/bid, and quote preparation/bid running.
  • Participates in business development events.
  • Assists with other duties as assigned by management.
What You’ll Need
  • Ability to work with field concepts and work in the office.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Effective communication (oral, written, presentation, listening) with internal and external customers.
  • Effective motivational and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations, mean, median, and averages.
  • Ability to maintain compliance with all Veit policies and procedures.
  • Ability to respond to shifting priorities in a fast‑paced environment with a can‑do attitude.
What Will Set You Apart
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering or related field; 1‑3 years of estimating and managing projects experience in related scope of work, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prior experience using construction software is a plus.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret project plans and specifications.
Other
  • Must have a clean Motor Vehicle record.
  • Requires 8 to 10‑hour workdays, Monday – Friday.
  • Travel requirement is 80% to mission critical job sites.
