Position SummaryThe Engineering Manager is responsible for designing and implementing common contract logistics processes and driving continuous performance improvement. This engineer will also provide engineering support for new and/or expanding business implementations. The Engineer Manager supports multifaceted operations based on a detailed understanding of client needs, contributes to facility layout and design, determines appropriate equipment, and routinely supports the physical implementation of solutions.
The role maintains financial and engineering metrics that meet or exceed performance goals and may include managing Logistics Engineers and/or Interns/Co‑ops.
- Ensures all distribution system functionality is configured to optimize performance (e.g., warehouse management, labor management, slotting, and reporting applications).
- Establishes work measurement programs and analyzes work samples to develop standards for labor utilization.
- Analyzes contractual commitments, customer specifications, design changes and other data to drive continuous improvement.
- Performs special research or technical studies critical to logistic support functions.
- Performs cost/benefit trade‑off analysis and develops ROI business cases for recommended projects involving process, system, or technology change.
- Forecasts facility, vehicle, staffing and/or material handling equipment needs to improve cost, utilization, service and efficiencies.
- Conducts studies to determine the most efficient sequence of operations and workflow.
- Recommends methods for maximizing utilization of production facilities and personnel by restructuring job duties, reorganizing workflow, relocating workstations and equipment, and purchasing equipment in adherence to regulations.
- Provides labor planning tools tailored to the client’s business and agreed operating processes.
- Identifies and procures all necessary capital expense items to support successful launch of operation.
- Participates in Advance Quality Planning sessions to validate requirements and processes.
- Determines and gains agreement on final design of facility, operating process, equipment type and quantity.
- Partners with functional groups (HR, IT, Operations, etc.) to develop Standard Operating Procedures.
- Provides action items to Project Management for successful implementation.
- Documents and communicates common processes for all distribution functions.
- Reviews data and summarizes expectations to address gaps in operation.
- Identifies areas for improvement based on data analysis and observations.
- Communicates opportunities for improvement in the distribution network.
- Helps determine key metrics and provides recommendations to guide management.
- Assists with developing/presenting training materials and classes for distribution processes.
- Brings cross‑functional teams together to collaborate on projects.
- Supports the labor management program and ensures alignment among policies, procedures and improvement projects.
- Facilitates LEAN methodology and recommends solutions to specific business case issues.
- Applies essential LEAN elements like workflow smoothing, JIT and Jidoka.
- Utilizes statistical tools such as Pareto charts, histograms and cause‑and‑effect diagrams.
- Creates Value Stream Maps or Flow Diagrams to identify critical quality points.
