Adjunct, Surveying
Craven Community College is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Surveying Instructor to join our Career Program – Computer Aided Drafting department. The ideal candidate will have a passion for teaching and a deep understanding of surveying principles, techniques, and technologies. This position involves delivering high‑quality instruction in both classroom and field settings, developing curriculum, and fostering an engaging learning environment for a diverse student population.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Teaching:
Deliver courses in surveying and related subjects, including land surveying, construction surveying, GPS, and GIS. - Curriculum Development:
Work with faculty to design and update course materials to reflect current industry practices and technological advancements. - Field Instruction:
Conduct practical field exercises and demonstrations, guiding students in the use of surveying instruments and software. - Student Assessment:
Evaluate student performance through assignments, exams, and hands‑on projects; provide constructive feedback and support for student success. - Collaboration:
Work with colleagues to enhance the overall quality of the class. - Professional Development:
Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and educational methodologies; participate in professional development opportunities. - Mastery of Subject Matter:
Demonstrate a thorough and accurate knowledge of the discipline; interpret and evaluate the theories of the field; connect subject matter with related fields; stay current through professional development and participation in professional organizations. - Use technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience when appropriate.
- Teach a course load appropriate to the discipline.
- Plan and organize instruction to maximize documented student learning.
- Employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter.
- Modify instructional methods to meet diverse student needs.
- Employ available instructional technology (Internet, telecourses, interactive technology).
- Encourage development of communication skills and higher‑order thinking skills through assignments.
- Incorporate core competencies into curriculum.
- Develop, update, and post course syllabi in a timely manner according to policies.
- Provide ADA‑compliant materials and accommodations with proper documentation.
- Establish meaningful student learning outcomes for courses/programs.
- Develop and explain fair measurement methods for student progress.
- Evaluate student performance fairly, return work promptly, and maintain accurate records.
- Submit final grade rosters each semester on time.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to student needs and circumstances.
- Teach classes as assigned in a multi‑campus environment.
- Maintain confidentiality of student information.
- Exercise stewardship of college facilities and materials.
- Respond promptly to information requests from administrators.
- Post all final grades no later than the required date on the academic calendar.
- Be available before or after classes for student discussions; schedule appointments as needed.
- Adequately prepare each class session with materials, assessments, and activities.
- Take attendance, post to Self‑Service for census, and finalize attendance at term end.
- Maintain an active presence in online and hybrid classes via announcements, forums, journals, chats, and feedback.
- Reply to student questions within 48 hours on instructional days.
- Grade and return all assignments within 5 instructional days for 8‑week courses and 10 days for longer courses.
- Use the Moodle gradebook (or approved gradebook) to post grades.
- Employ at least one alternative assessment beyond automatic quizzes and tests.
- Monitor attendance and post to Self‑Service for census; notify when a student is inactive, and finalize attendance at term end.
- Bachelor's degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
