Police Officer Trainee

General Definition of Work

This is a temporary position. To be considered, applicants must currently be enrolled in good standing in a North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program. If selected for employment, you must obtain North Carolina Law Enforcement Certification within one year.

Under close supervision, attends NC Basic Law Enforcement Training (NC BLET) to obtain certification in order to perform Police Officer duties; performs related work as required.

The following tasks are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

• Attends NC BLET to acquire knowledge and skills required to perform Police Officer duties.
• Attends formal and comprehensive NC BLET program.
• May be assigned non-sworn duties in the Police Department.
• Performs related tasks as required.

• Some knowledge of the geography of the City and location of important buildings; ability to learn various police procedures and law enforcement techniques.
• Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and prepare clear reports.
• Ability to effectively perform work in stressful situations.
• Ability to deal courteously but firmly with the public; analyze situations and adopt quick and effective courses of action.
• Skill in the use of firearms and operation of an automobile.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with associates and the public.

Education Requirements:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.

• Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
• Must meet and maintain minimum training and experience qualifications for position as established by the City and the State of North Carolina.
• Upon successful completion of the NC BLET program, the trainee will be sworn in as a Police Officer with the City of New Bern.
