Position: Deputy Sheriff - Transport (DS-Transport)

Deputy Sheriff – Transport (DS‑Transport)

Perform general duty law‑enforcement work by transporting criminal inmates to and from various facilities throughout the state. Responsibilities include serving legal papers, attending court, answering complaint calls, and handling public interactions with tact and firmness. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Patrol Division Captain and Transport Sergeant.

  • Assist in planning and arranging out‑of‑county transports and pick‑ups of prisoners; oversee expenditures related to overnight travel, lodging, meals, and fuel purchasing.
  • Answer complaint calls and assist in investigating crimes and disturbances, interview witnesses, gather evidence, interrogate suspects, make arrests, and prepare investigation reports.
  • Serve legal papers such as summons, warrants, capiases, commitment papers, and special court orders; make arrests when necessary; appear in court as a witness if required; cooperate with law‑enforcement officers of other agencies for transports.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Graduation from high school and some law‑enforcement training or experience preferred.
  • Possession of a Basic Law Enforcement Training Certificate, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certification as a law‑enforcement officer and completion of all requirements set by the North Carolina Sheriffs Training and Standards Commission.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment, including computers, typewriters, copiers, firearms, two‑way radios, nightsticks, and restraint devices.
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently.

Other Information

  • Serves in other capacities of the Sheriffs Office on an as‑needed basis, including civil, investigations, patrol, and administrative divisions.
