Parks Maintenance Technician

Performs responsible semiskilled work in a variety of park maintenance and repair assignments; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

• Performs a variety of tasks in maintaining and updating parks, grounds, and city right of ways.
• Mows grass, edges sidewalks and curbs, weed eats and blows off debris from surfaces.
• Operates dump body trucks, mowers, tractors, and related equipment in performance of tasks.
• Repairs and maintains a variety of power equipment.
• Plants and transplants trees, shrubs, and flowers; trims, mulches, waters and prunes trees and shrubs; sews grass seed; aerates grass areas.
• Performs custodial duties; cleans bathrooms; paint facilities.
• Prepares athletic fields for playing; marks lines.
• May be required to work outside normal working hours in an emergency, stand‑by status, or special events.
• Performs related tasks as required.

General knowledge of the maintenance, repair and manual tasks of the area assigned; general knowledge in the use of common and specialized hand and power tools required in the work; general knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of mechanical equipment required in the work; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions;

ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience as a semiskilled worker in maintenance, repair and/or construction activities. Education requirement may be waived as determined by the Department Head.

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. CPR and First Aid required or must be obtained within six (6) months.
