Occupational Summary

Under the supervision of the Director of Security and Emergency Management, the Campus Security Officer is responsible for the security and safety of the College community, remaining alert to respond to emergency situations and providing first‑line response and emergency management. This position enforces the College's policies and procedures, and provides other security and safety related services. The officer provides information, orientation, and escort services to the College community and its visitors.

Incumbents generally work alone on routine work assignments, checking in with the supervisor on non‑routine assignments or when in doubt as to the correct procedure to follow.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Conduct routine security patrols on foot and by vehicle around buildings, parking lots, and campus grounds to prevent vandalism, theft, alcohol and drug use, breaking and entering, and to be alert to any weapon(s) that may be brought to campus.
  • Assist in medical emergencies, fire evacuations, tornado warnings, bomb threats, and exercise drills.
  • Monitor the campus via the video monitor system.
  • Lock and unlock buildings, classrooms, and offices in support of class schedules, and support contractor personnel via the access control system.
  • Activate emergency notification systems as necessary.
  • Communicate and escalated security incidents or related information in accordance with standard instructions and procedures.
  • Write incident, medical, and other related security and safety reports as necessary and conduct interviews involving incidents that occur on campus.
  • Maintain daily log sheets on campus activities and provide briefing statements to oncoming officers.
  • Direct traffic during peak periods and special events, reserve parking spaces for various meetings and conferences.
  • Provide information, orientation, and escort services to the College community and its visitors.
  • Serve as a Campus Security Authority as outlined in the Clery Act.
  • Enforce the College Student Code of Conduct and investigate incidents when necessary.
  • Counsel students who violate College policies and procedures and refer them to the proper authority when necessary.
  • Participate in security training.
  • Participate in appropriate committees and task forces as assigned.
  • Perform other job‑related duties and projects as assigned in support of the College's mission, core values, and goals.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Two years full‑time law enforcement, security, prison environment or other closely related experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid NC Driver's License.
  • Must possess and maintain valid CPR, first aid and AED certification.
Preferred
  • Basic Law Enforcement Certification.
  • Associate's degree in Criminal Justice or related field from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge
  • Policies, rules and regulations concerning campus control, security, property protection and appropriate student behavior.
  • Methods and techniques of interviewing, report preparation and record keeping.
  • Emergency response procedures and techniques, including first aid, CPR, fire safety and control.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
