Utility Maintenance Worker I, II or Lead Worker (DOQ) (00508) Overview

Responsible semiskilled work in the installation, construction, repair and maintenance of water and sewer lines and associated equipment. Work performed under regular supervision.

Responsibilities & Typical Tasks
  • Installing, maintaining and repairing water and sewer lines and associated equipment.
  • Respond to service calls; repair pumps, wiring, etc.
  • Complete daily reports and service orders.
  • Unstop sewer lines with rodding machine.
  • Operate trucks and lawn mowers as needed.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • General knowledge of tools, materials and equipment used in utility line work.
  • Familiarity with hand and power tools, preventive maintenance of automotive and mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to perform manual and semiskilled labor for extended periods, often in unfavorable weather.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public.
Education and Experience
  • Utility Maintenance Worker I:
    High‑school graduation (or equivalent) plus experience in maintenance/repair/construction of water and sewer lines. Education may be waived as determined by the Department Head.
  • Utility Maintenance Worker II
    :
    High‑school graduation (or equivalent) and considerable experience in maintenance/repair/construction of water and sewer lines. Must possess Grade‑C Water Distribution or Grade‑I Wastewater Certification issued by the State of North Carolina.
  • Utility Maintenance Lead Worker
    :
    High‑school graduation (or equivalent) and extensive experience in water and sewer line maintenance or construction. Must possess Grade‑C Water Distribution and Grade‑I Wastewater Collections certifications issued by the State of North Carolina.
Special Requirements
  • Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina.
