Special Education Teacher, Teacher Assistant/ Paraprofessional

Purpose:
Provide additional and supplemental instruction for identified Dyslexic students.
Qualifications:- Education/Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree from accredited university
- Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements for subject and level assigned
- Special Ed Certification preferred
- Dyslexia training required within six months of employment
- ESL Certification required within six months of employment
- Special Knowledge/
Skills:- Expert knowledge of classroom management, effective instructional strategies and practices
- Ability to demonstrate and develop these effective practices for classroom teachers
- Ability to support program effectiveness and program compliance
- Ability to coordinate between content areas
- Ability to analyze and interpret data
- Ability to evaluate and enhance delivery of effective instructional practices
- Strong organizational, communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to establish and maintain relationships with campus teachers and administrators
- Experience:
Minimum three year of teaching experience
Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Management
- Evaluates and provides instructional support for students identified with dyslexia using research based approved curriculum.
- Helps teachers to analyze classroom formative assessment student data and plan for effective interventions.
- Consults frequently with classroom teachers on matters relating to instructional methods and materials.
- Recommends use of varied instructional materials including textbooks, technology, references, kits, trade books, and other materials.
- Works with special cases whose difficulty or complexity requires a high degree of professional skill and knowledge.
- Helps teachers to diagnose student strengths and weaknesses, matching these skills with appropriate techniques, materials, and/or technology for academic improvement.
- Facilitates teacher implementation of state and district curriculum.
- Participates in design, implementation and evaluation of campus staff development.
- Attends appropriate professional meetings and workshops to maintain proficiency and to acquire new ideas for instructional improvement. Informs administration of the effects of current and impending legislation.
- Participates in campus grade level or content meetings to plan for improvement
- Provides assistance and/or support as needed to students, parents and community.
- Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with parents, students, and teachers.
- Keeps school staff informed as to new development in subject matter areas.
- Orients beginning teachers, aides and school volunteer aides as to the philosophy, procedures and materials for the dyslexia program.
- Compiles, maintains, and files all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
- Complies with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and the local board policy.
- Expands leadership skills and knowledge base through self-initiated professional development activities.
- Conducts oneself in a professional, ethical manner in accordance with New Braunfels ISD Standards of Conduct and complies with the Texas Education Agency Code of Ethics.
- Attends and participates in bi-monthly district meetings with curriculum specialists and communicates with campus as appropriate.
- Keeps the campus informed as to the purposes and progress of district and state instructional program(s) and requirements.
- Demonstrates awareness of district-community needs and initiates activities to meet needs.
- Supervise assigned teacher aide(s).
Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals
Posture: Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment.
Motion: Repetitive hand motions including frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching
Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)
Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; occasional district wide travel
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress. Occasional district wide and statewide travel; frequent prolonged and irregular hours.
