Primary Function / Responsibility
  • The Youth Care Specialist monitors, guides, coaches, instructs, mentors, and communicates politely with all youth in their daily setting. Youth are treated as Very Important People (VIP's) with a quality customer service‑oriented attitude and behavior to build sustainable self‑regulation skills.
  • Provides direct care for abused/neglected youth through a therapeutic and trauma‑informed framework.
  • Works collaboratively with the entire team and schedules regular meetings to coordinate all the needs of children and campus activities.
  • Communicates effectively with co‑workers, medical personnel, and other stakeholders necessary to care for the needs of children.
  • Provides emotional support utilizing trauma‑informed techniques, praise, positive feedback, affection, and empathy to build client self‑regulation.
  • Uses rational problem‑solving techniques to teach critical thinking skills, assist with behavioral problems, counsel through personal issues, and provide crisis intervention.
  • Plans, participates, and provides opportunities for individual and family activities that are both educational and entertaining.
  • Models positive parenting, family, and individual relationship skills to clients, parents, legal guardians, and caretakers.
  • Maintains contact and records with both internal and external agencies to obtain or provide information regarding youth behaviors, strategies, and progress.
  • Prepares written records for program budgeting, weekly menus, tracking youth progress, reporting incidents/behaviors, and collaborates with the case manager on documenting medical needs and appointments within the prescribed timeframe.
  • Teaches and models positive values and ethical behaviors, encouraging participation in activities while respecting everyone’s personal space.
  • Assists with supervising the activities assigned to direct care staff to aid in client development and success.
  • Assists youth with laundering personal laundry.
  • Manages the daily operating schedule of the residence; assists with youth transportation needs and overall facility upkeep (inside and outside).
  • Adheres to all SJRC Touchstone policies and procedures, campus and residence guidelines, and DFPS GRO minimum standards.
  • Reports any suspected abuse or neglect to the Administrator on duty and immediately reports the information to DFPS: txabusehotline.org.
  • Keeps the Administrator and/or Director informed immediately in the event of emergencies or unusual developments.
  • Attends scheduled trainings and staff meetings.
  • Documents USDA food program data.
  • Ensures compliance with all licensing regulations and contract requirements.
  • Always ensures safety and supervision of youth.
  • Completes all duties assigned by the supervisor.
  • Reports campus maintenance to the supervisor.
  • Follows individualized therapeutic protocols for youth.
  • Ensures basic needs of hygiene, nutrition, and clothing are met for each child.
  • Prepares and serves daily meals as needed.
  • Maintains cleanliness of the home environment, ensuring a safe and secure environment.
  • Gives youth guidance in self‑regulation related to social settings, self‑help, academics, independent living preparation, problem solving, personal hygiene, financial literacy, and employability skills.
  • Counsels youth through personal challenges using principles of the Neurosequential model of therapeutics, in accordance with required regulatory standards.
  • Attends to youth’s medical, dental, vision, and behavioral health needs.
  • Provides for moral, spiritual, and educational development of youth.
  • Provides crisis intervention to youth while maintaining emotional self‑control.
  • Organizes and participates in play/recreational time with the youth.
  • Supports and assists youth with all educational needs, including homework, projects, and extracurricular activities.
  • Provides transportation as needed to school, work, appointments, and recreational activities.
  • Assists the Shift Supervisors in providing documentation, services, and treatment needs to youth.
