Resident Primary Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant

Position Summary

The Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA) Resident functions as a member of a medical team and applies their medical and related skills acquired through the training and/or experience required for this position. The resident will receive continuous mentorship while providing direct clinical care to our diverse patient population as well as engage in formal weekly educational didactics.

APRN or PA residents will leave our residency program with enhanced clinical skills and tools to make a lasting impact on community health. This position will provide services within one or more Wheeler program(s), and the relative concentration between and within programs may change with the needs of the clinic.

Salary: $80,000

Education and Experience / Qualifications

Master's of Science in Nursing or Physician Assistant studies is required. Must be board certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners or American Nurses Credentialing Center; or as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

Licensed Registered Nurse and Licensed Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut; or licensed as a Physician Assistant.

Active DEA controlled substance registration and an active Connecticut controlled substance registration.

Ability to acquire and maintain certification in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Professionals no later than 90 days from date of hire.

Location

Health Centers located in New Britain, Bristol, Plainville, Waterbury and Hartford, CT.

Schedule

Full time, starting in Fall 2026 for a one‑year residency placement

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of board‑certified Primary Care Nurse Practitioners and Physicians, the Resident:

  • Conducts medical evaluations and formulates accurate diagnoses in accordance with the International Classification of Diseases, manages prescribed medication, performs physical health examinations, conducts preventive screening and care, focuses on developing clear clinical impressions and recommendations that are specific and attainable, and documents clear clinical formulations and medical treatment plans.
  • Prescribes therapeutic interventions appropriate to identified problems and administers drugs and biologics as required by the Clinic.
  • Demonstrates a basic knowledge of physical health concerns and effective medical interventions, triages clinical emergencies and implements safety and consultation protocols using evidence‑based best practice.
  • Monitors patients' self‑care management and self‑care skills, and provides prevention, wellness, and pertinent medical education.
  • Provides requisitions for clinical studies, diagnostic tests, and laboratory studies, evaluates and interprets results to identify and assess patient’s clinical problems and health care needs.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of internal and external levels of care, referral processes and resources, and makes clinically appropriate referrals for consultation with specialists, subspecialists, and allied health professionals as indicated.
