About

The Role

The Vice President Business Development Oncology Transactions will lead Business Development activities for the Oncology franchise, J&J Innovative Medicine’s largest and fastest growing therapeutic area. Specifically, the position will be accountable for leading activities in the Hematological Malignancies and Immuno–Oncology (I/O) spaces.

The Vice President leads a team to identify, evaluate, and execute value‑creating transactions in support of the Pharmaceuticals Group’s growth strategies across the Oncology portfolio. Duties include search, due diligence, business case development, negotiations, financing, communications to senior management, closing deals, integration of assets, divestitures, renegotiation of agreements, and external marketplace presence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Source assets that drive near‑ & amp; long‑term growth of the portfolio based on identified gaps.
  • Add new assets to replace those lost to attrition and sustain pipeline freshness.
  • Integrate strategic & amp; cross‑functional teams and ensure adherence to guidelines (e.g., WW420C).
  • Determine screening criteria and rationale for targeting new business opportunities in alignment with J&J strategic goals.
  • Evaluate assumptions, risks, and opportunities to determine organizational impact.
  • Direct teams to make go/no‑go decisions in a timely manner based on available data.
  • Develop and communicate business cases aligned with strategic goals.
  • Oversee structuring, negotiation, and closing of deals, including execution of contracts, amendments, and confidentiality agreements.
  • Build and lead a high‑performing Business Development Oncology team, including talent scouting and development.
Business Environment & Context

Business Development & Licensing and Acquisitions play a critical role in building the Pharmaceutical business for J&J. Supplementing our internal development with external compounds is essential to achieve long‑term growth and bring an objective view when evaluating value. This function requires continuous direct meetings with C‑suite executives of global biopharma companies.

Required Business & Leadership Experiences

The role requires ability to create compelling business cases, influence multifunctional teams, prioritize opportunities, scan for breakthrough opportunities, build networks, and leverage market, technology, and competition trends. Strong curiosity, deep scientific knowledge, and financial acumen are essential. Must be an objective partner to R&D and capable of structuring deals in a risk‑adjusted manner.

Required Education And Experience

Advanced degree (Ph.D., MBA, M.S., or equivalent). Minimum 15 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, with proven business development and licensing leadership. Knowledge of the Oncology space is a plus.

Compensation

Base salary: $271,150 – $366,850 (USD). Eligible for annual performance bonus and long‑term incentive program. Travel: 25% domestic and international.
