Assistant Professor of Composition (Commercial Music)
The Department of Music at the Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University, invites applications for a tenure‑track Assistant Professor of Composition (Commercial Music). We seek a creative, dynamic composer with significant professional experience in media scoring (e.g., film, television, online media, video games) and popular songwriting.
OverviewHoused in one of the leading public research universities on the East Coast, the Department of Music at Mason Gross School of the Arts includes approximately 450 students and 100 total faculty, offering bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees as well as an artist diploma across a comprehensive range of areas in performance, composition, conducting, jazz studies, music education, music theory, and musicology.
Students perform, teach, refine their skills, and forge new paths in the arts through their scholastic and creative endeavors, engaging with faculty who are among the world’s leaders in their respective fields, including several who are drawn from the nearby New York Philharmonic and Philadelphia Orchestra. Students benefit from proximity to these two cultural hubs, with ensembles regularly performing in such venues as the Blue Note Jazz Club, Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall.

- Engage in creative and professional activities, including building industry partnerships, producing new work for commercial applications, and fostering interdisciplinary collaborations within the school and university.
- Teach courses and lessons in music composition, specifically focusing on songwriting and/or scoring for film, television, video games, and online media platforms.
- Assess current curriculum offerings and develop a new commercial music program.
- Serve as the administrative leader of the commercial music program, including reviewing and revising curricula in media scoring and music production.
- Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
- Engage in service activities within the Department of Music, the university, and the music composition community at large.
- Participate in committees, student advising, and other departmental responsibilities.
