Posting SummaryThe university seeks a Classroom Assistant to support the certified special education teacher in delivering educational and behavioral programming at the Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center – School Program.
Responsibilities- Assist the certified special education teacher with educational and behavioral programming for students with developmental disabilities.
- Work with active students in 1‑to‑1 or small group settings (2‑4 students) in a busy, moderately noisy environment.
- Support classrooms of students with severe behavior challenges, including implementing crisis‑management techniques such as defensive strategies for punches, kicks, and other aggressive behaviors.
- Maintain educational and behavioral records for each student in designated notebooks under the supervision of a certified Special Education Teacher.

Part‑time, 19.5 hours per week, daily shift, hour‑only appointment. Temporary staff appointment.
QualificationsMinimum Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non‑computerized formats.
- Ability to use specialized instructional and record‑keeping instruments.
- Ability to work with children and/or young adults with autism or other special needs.
- Effective client service skills and clear communication.
- Ability to instruct and provide support to the specific student population.
Preferred Qualifications
- Some relevant experience working with children.
- Must be physically capable of safely providing crisis‑management techniques including restraining, lifting, and blocking individuals with challenging behavior after training.
- Applicants must agree to undergo fingerprint, criminal history, and child‑abuse record checks with federal and state agencies. Applicants assume any costs associated with background investigations.
- A Mantoux test will be administered to verify the absence of tuberculosis. Successful applicants will be required to receive Hepatitis B vaccination unless waived in writing.
