The Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center provides direct service psychology programs for underserved populations. The Classroom Assistant II supports educational and behavioral programming for students with developmental disabilities, enhancing therapeutic outcomes and community engagement.
Posting SummaryRutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Classroom Assistant to assist the certified special education teacher in providing educational and behavioral programming for students at the Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center - School Program. Key duties include:
- Assisting the certified special education teacher in delivering educational and behavioral programming for students with developmental disabilities.
- Supporting classrooms of students with severe behavior challenges, implementing crisis management techniques and using physical restraint when necessary.
- Assisting in educational and/or behavioral programs for pre‑kindergarten through 12th grade students who may have special needs.
- High school or vocational school education or equivalent with some relevant experience working with children.
- Required to obtain CPR/First Aid certification within six months of employment.
- Ability to work with children and/or young adults with autism or other special needs.
- Effective communication and client‑service skills, ability to instruct and provide support to the specific student population.
- Proficiency in recording and maintaining data in both computerized and non‑computerized formats.
- Ability to use specialized instructional and/or record‑keeping instruments.
- Some college credits in an approved bachelor’s degree program in psychology, special education, or related field.
- Completion of the DDDC undergraduate fieldwork course.
- Basic knowledge of autism.
- Basic computer skills (Word processing, data entry, etc.).

- Must be physically active and be on feet most of the day.
- Duties may involve running and playing active games with individuals with autism (ages 3½ – 21 years), driving vans or other vehicles.
- Physically capable of safely providing crisis management techniques including restraining, lifting, and blocking individuals with challenging behavior.
- Crowded and moderately noisy conditions with children, adolescents, and staff moving about.
- Must be able to withstand blows to the chest, head, and other areas.
- Must be able to assist and lift physically resistant individuals with developmental disabilities.
