Urban Engineers, is seeking a seasoned Resident Engineer to lead field oversight for a major, multi-year railroad infrastructure program in New Brunswick, NJ. This full‑time, on‑site role is ideal for a civil/structural PE with deep rail construction experience who thrives in the field and wants to grow into higher leadership within Urban’s Rail & Transit group.
You’ll guide day‑to‑day construction activities, supervise inspectors and office engineering staff, coordinate with Amtrak/NJ Transit, and ensure all work meets strict rail standards and project milestones. This is a high‑visibility opportunity to support a $500M+ program on the Northeast Corridor.
Location- On‑site
, New Brunswick, NJ (adjacent to the Northeast Corridor) - Field‑based role within an active rail environment
- Occasional weekend work may be required
- Lead daily on‑site construction management and contractor oversight for a major rail program
- Supervise and mentor construction inspection and office engineering staff
- Coordinate with Amtrak, NJ Transit, and freight rail partners; manage staging/phasing near active tracks
- Review CPM schedules, progress reports, and adherence to the project’s quality management plan
- Evaluate and recommend approval of Change Orders and Contractor pay applications
- Lead field meetings, track documentation, and resolve construction‑related issues
- Oversee site safety and ensure OSHA and rail‑safety compliance
- Serve as a key technical resource with long‑term potential to grow into departmental leadership (HM guidance)
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required
- 10+ years of construction management/inspection/engineering experience—ideally rail, transit, or complex heavy civil projects (20 years overall engineering experience preferred)
- Strong civil/structural background: track, foundations, catenary, stations, or facilities
- Experience supervising field/inspection teams
- Demonstrated knowledge of passenger + freight railroad standards, codes, and construction practices
- Experience working adjacent to active railroad operations; NJT/Amtrak safety training (provided as needed)
- Excellent communication, documentation, and leadership skills
- OSHA 10 (can be provided) and valid driver’s license
