Summary

The Lead Phlebotomist performs phlebotomy duties and acts as the area lead under the direction of a laboratory supervisor or manager. The Lead is responsible for monitoring and coordinating the workflow within the phlebotomy section for both inpatient and outpatient collection and processing and redirects personnel resources to ensure the efficient care of patients. The incumbent will orient and train staff and maintain quality performance practices.

The Lead assists internal and external customers with information, reports, and services as needed.

Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Phlebotomy and/or Medical assistant certification
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in adult and pediatric phlebotomy
  • Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for a minimum of 60 minutes
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 lbs
  • Laboratory experience (preferred)
Scheduling Requirements

  • Night Shift 11p - 7:30a
  • Weekend and Holiday Rotations
Responsibilities
  • Assist in overall daily operations of the section, including scheduling, collecting, receiving, processing specimens, and stocking/managing supplies
  • Organize and assign staffing accordingly for collection of inpatient and outpatient volumes
  • Monitor turnaround time collection process and recommend enhancements
  • Report feedback to Manager/Supervisors and relay instructions to phlebotomists as required to enhance specimen quality
  • Resolve problems and complaints associated with inpatient/outpatient blood draws and report to Manager/Supervisor
  • Review and investigate non-conformities with service goals
  • Provide administrative support to Supervisor
  • Collaborate effectively and professionally with all departments and team members, fostering positive communication, cooperation, and quality service delivery
  • Train and mentor new staff or students as needed, promoting professionalism, lab excellence, continuous learning, and adherence to best practices
  • Listen to patient queries, comments, and/or concerns and provide appropriate information and responses
  • Introduce self when interacting with patients, families, visitors, or other employees
  • Enter patient demographics, test orders, billing information into Epic computer systems
  • Follow established SOP and age-specific techniques for collection and processing of blood for analysis and solve related problems
  • Correctly identify outpatients and inpatients per approved protocols
  • Perform accurate venipuncture and micro capillary techniques in sample collection
  • Label specimens per established procedure
  • Draw all timed/scheduled samples at the proper interval
  • Operate pneumatic tube system properly and observe all Infection Control policies while handling specimens
  • Maintain a safe and orderly work area
  • Demonstrate safe work practices
  • Answer phone in a professional, courteous, and timely manner, speaking to caller in a caring manner per Department protocol
  • Research phone inquiries regarding specimen collection or test results by referencing available manuals and records, and call caller back promptly
  • Project an image of professionalism in appearance and conduct at all times
  • Comply with Hospital, Laboratory, Safety, and HIPAA regulations
  • Notify Supervisor of hazards when found
  • Complete annual mandatories on or before the due date
  • Follow direction of Lab Leadership for all tasks assigned
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned to support laboratory operations and patient care
