Position Overview
Rutgers School of Health Professions (SHP) is seeking a Work Assistant (Medical Interpreter) – Per Diem to staff the Health Outreach Practice Experience (HOPE) Clinic in Plainfield, NJ. The position is scheduled for Mondays and requires a fully on‑site work arrangement.

Hours:
1.00 hour per shift - Work Arrangement:
Fully on‑site
- Demonstrate verbal and written fluency in Spanish and English.
- Translate verbal and written medical information precisely and accurately from English to Spanish and vice‑versa.
- Answer the phone or screen messages and interpret content to the appropriate team member.
- Interpret and translate for patient care, including intake of demographics and medical/social information; gathering of patient history and physical exam; explanation of assessment and treatment plan.
- Interact with other providers or staff, external to the office, over the phone or virtual device.
- Communicate with strong interpersonal skills and patient‑centered orientation.
- Maintain a professional demeanor and abide by the ethical and behavioral standards of the medical team.
- Maintain confidentiality of records and information.
- Collaborate with faculty, students, and staff, including other interpreters/ translators.
- Seek and incorporate feedback to improve performance.
Minimum Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Fluency in Spanish and English required.
- Understanding of diverse cultural/socioeconomic backgrounds, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work well under pressure.
Preferred Qualifications
- Training in medical interpreting or equivalent experience preferred.
- Experience in medical interpretation preferred.
