Position Overview

Rutgers School of Health Professions (SHP) is seeking a Work Assistant (Medical Interpreter) – Per Diem to staff the Health Outreach Practice Experience (HOPE) Clinic in Plainfield, NJ. The position is scheduled for Mondays and requires a fully on‑site work arrangement.

• Demonstrate verbal and written fluency in Spanish and English.
• Translate verbal and written medical information precisely and accurately from English to Spanish and vice‑versa.
• Answer the phone or screen messages and interpret content to the appropriate team member.
• Interpret and translate for patient care, including intake of demographics and medical/social information; gathering of patient history and physical exam; explanation of assessment and treatment plan.
• Interact with other providers or staff, external to the office, over the phone or virtual device.
• Communicate with strong interpersonal skills and patient‑centered orientation.
• Maintain a professional demeanor and abide by the ethical and behavioral standards of the medical team.
• Maintain confidentiality of records and information.
• Collaborate with faculty, students, and staff, including other interpreters/ translators.
• Seek and incorporate feedback to improve performance.

Minimum Education and Experience

• High school diploma or GED required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Fluency in Spanish and English required.
• Understanding of diverse cultural/socioeconomic backgrounds, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work well under pressure.

Preferred Qualifications

• Training in medical interpreting or equivalent experience preferred.
• Experience in medical interpretation preferred.
