Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Assistant Vice President Academic Labor Relations for the Office of University Labor Relations. This position reports to the Executive Vice President and General Counsel and Associate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel. The role is responsible for managing and leading the academic labor relations functions, coordinating with University leadership and external stakeholders, leading collective negotiations and policy development, and providing guidance on compliance and grievance management.
Responsibilities- Manage the academic labor relations functions of the University.
- Provide leadership and coordination of academic labor relations at Rutgers.
- Work closely with the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Chief Academic Officer, the Office of the General Counsel, Rutgers University Human Resources, and Chancellors in planning strategy for contract negotiations and contract implementations.
- Participate in collective negotiations with academic labor unions in coordination with the Executive Vice President and General Counsel.
- Serve as Chief Negotiator, if assigned.
- Assist with policy development.
- Handle implementation of new collective negotiation agreements.
- Manage and oversee all faculty grievances.
- Provide advice and guidance to all members of the University community regarding compliance, interpretation, and application of the academic collective negotiation agreements and applicable University policies.
- Provide advice and guidance pertaining to non-routine academic personnel issues.
- Direct and conduct complex academic labor relations activities, including, but not limited to: collective negotiations issues.
- Serve as a key member of all academic collective negotiation teams.
- Work directly with faculty union leaders to resolve complaints and concerns.
- Develop and present university-wide workshops and training sessions.
- Develop and implement university-wide policies and procedures.
- Administer the faculty appointment and promotion process and other processes outlined in the collective negotiation agreement for the University.
- Minimum
Education and Experience:
Master’s degree or law degree and at least five (5) years of experience in labor relations and/or employee relations, preferably in a higher education environment, or an equivalent combination of education and/or related experience. - Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in direct supervision and leading labor strategy.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, analytical and organizational skills.
- System and data knowledge and ability to synthesize, evaluate, and apply data in developing labor strategies, and in the collective negotiations and contract implementation process.
- Demonstrated leadership, management and problem‑solving skills.
- Knowledge of labor and employee relations law.
- Ability to handle sensitive situations and information with discretion.
