Overview

The George Street Co-op is a non-profit natural foods store owned and run by its members. We sell vegetarian foods with the greatest nutritional value possible, and only minimal processing or additives. Everyone is welcome to shop at the Co-op and choose from our excellent selection of fresh organic produce, bulk foods, vitamins & herbs, body care and earth-friendly products, gifts, and more.

Think you might be interested in joining The George Street Co-op’s Personnel Committee? Our committee is currently seeking volunteers.

If you have an interest in human resources, personnel policy writing, labor law, employee relations, and workplace issues the Personnel Committee might be of interest to you. The function of our Personnel Committee is comparable to that of an HR department. We draft policies regarding the Co-op staff, revise and update the Co-op’s Employee Manual, see to it that employees are provided with a copy of the Manual and other required documents, assist the manager with implementing policies and complying with labor rules, check that employees’ files are kept up-to-date and that evaluations occur on schedule, handle official grievances, and conduct exit interviews.

In addition, we also assist the Board of Directors in conducting the manager’s evaluation.

Some projects we are currently working on include:

  • Amending and updating the Co-op’s Employee Manual.
  • Improving the organization of our HR files.
  • Conducting a round of confidential interviews with the Co-op staff.
  • Assisting the Board of Directors with Professional Development.
  • Assisting the Membership Committee with interviewing our volunteer workers.

A formal description of the Committee’s duties can be found in Article V Section II of our Bylaws.

The Committee meets virtually the fourth Wednesday of each month and meetings are open for all members to attend (please check the calendar for changes).

If this sounds like an interesting way to work your volunteer hours, please contact the Committee Chair at p
