Summary:

University Correctional Healthcare (UCHC) is seeking a per diem Mental Health Staff Nurse (RN) for the Northern State Prison in Newark, New Jersey. The Staff Nurse utilizes the nursing process to meet a variety of health care needs with ambulatory care as a primary focus. Works with a variety of health care professionals and security officers in a correctional environment. Frequently functions guided by nursing protocols.

Functions as a team leader as assigned. Demonstrates competency in assessment and identification of the psychological and physical health of adults (18 to 64 years), and geriatrics (65+) all population groups and their personal strengths. Identifies inmate-centered goals and nursing objectives and implements prescribed interventions and solutions for the identified problems.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct and indirect nursing care to meet physiological, psychosocial and emotional needs of the inmate-patient including adults (18 to 64 years) and geriatrics (65+) within the framework established by the correctional system.
  • Use psychiatric standards of nursing practice and classification of mental disorders to develop inmate treatment plans with specific goals and interventions delineating nursing actions unique to each inmate's needs.
  • Implement nursing actions that promote, maintain or restore physical and mental health of all age groups.
  • Evaluate inmate responses in collaboration with multi-disciplinary care providers to ensure quality inmate care.
  • Perform additional duties related to the milieu and its safety, as documented and supervised.
  • Assume responsibility for continuing education and professional development and contribute to the professional growth of co-workers.
Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience: Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in the State of New Jersey. Minimum of one (1) year of psychiatric experience required.

Certifications/Licenses: CPR certification required. Valid Driver's License required. Must possess own vehicle or have alternative means of transportation between sites.

Daily Work Shift: Rotating

Work Arrangement: This position requires a full onsite work arrangement.

Payroll Designation: People Soft

Terms of Appointment: Staff - 12 month

Sophisticated Conditions: Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.
