Posting Summary

This position conducts research on RNA polymerase structure and function and on small‑molecule inhibitors of RNA polymerase in the Richard Ebright Lab. Uses cryo‑ET, cryo‑EM, and X‑ray crystallography to define structures and structural transitions of transcription complexes and transcription‑translation complexes and to identify and characterize small‑molecule inhibitors of transcription. Prepares and assays proteins and nucleic acids, ribosomes. Generates text, tables, and figures for patent applications, scientific publications, and presents results at scientific meetings.

Performs professional-level experiments and research using various techniques. Carries out routine and non‑routine work with review of output by supervisor. Documents work performed, maintains a notebook and database, communicates effectively with supervisor, uses and helps maintain specialized equipment, maintains a clean and safe laboratory. Trains and leads research staff, postdoctoral associates, students, and technicians. Performs professional work requiring specialized knowledge, application, and use of concepts, theories, terminology, and practices.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct RNA polymerase biology research and study small‑molecule inhibitors.
  • Operate cryo‑EM, cryo‑ET, and X‑ray crystallography instrumentation.
  • Prepare and assay proteins, nucleic acids, ribosomes, and complexes.
  • Generate figures, tables, and manuscript sections for patent applications and scientific publications.
  • Present scientific results at conferences and meetings.
  • Maintain laboratory safety, organization, and equipment.
  • Document procedures and results in a comprehensive laboratory notebook and database.
  • Train and mentor junior trainees and technicians.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctorate in biochemistry, molecular biology, or an allied field.
  • In‑depth experience in preparation and analysis of proteins, nucleic acids, and complexes.
  • Hands‑on molecular cloning, sequencing, and site‑directed mutagenesis.
  • Hands‑on cryo‑EM, cryo‑ET, and/or X‑ray crystallography, including sample preparation, data collection, and processing.
  • Experience in structural and functional analysis of RNA polymerase and transcription complexes and/or ribosomes and translation complexes preferred.
  • Effective spoken and written English.
  • High level of computer literacy.
  • Experience with chromatography (FPLC and/or HPLC) and electrophoresis.
  • Experience with chemical, radiological, and biological hazards (biosafety levels 1 and
    2) required or preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
  • In‑depth experience with cryo‑EM and/or cryo‑ET, sample preparation, data collection, and processing.
Physical Demands
  • Average to above‑average mobility for laboratory work.
  • Average to above‑average upper‑body strength for lifting large‑volume culture flasks, bioreactors, cryo reservoirs, and other heavy items.
