The Zander laboratory at the Waksman Institute of Microbiology is looking for an individual that investigates powdery mildew resistance in hemp. The individual will also optimize a hemp transformation and genome editing platform. Research is carried out in the Zander laboratory, that conducts molecular, genetic and (epi) genomic research to better understand the role of transcription factors and the epigenome dynamics.
The individual needs to conduct research on questions related to powdery mildew resistance and susceptibility in hemp. Using genetic, genomic and biochemical methods, the individual will identify, analyze and characterize molecular determinants for powdery mildew resistance in hemp. The individual will report directly to the laboratory Principal Investigator (PI).
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- 90 % Conduct grant‑funded research as directed by the PI (Dr. Zander). This research will include performing genetic, (epi) genomics and proteomic analyses in hemp. It is expected that the research findings will be published, with the individual contributing to the writing and production of the resulting manuscript. The research findings will also serve as preliminary data for grant proposals, with the individual contributing to writing, producing and presenting results at scientific meetings.
- 10 % Train and oversee undergraduate researchers within the lab on related projects. This training will include showing undergraduates the methodologies of plant genetics, genomics, recombinant DNA techniques, protein biochemistry, PowerPoint oral presentations, poster presentation, proper record and notebook keeping, and basic laboratory techniques. Trained students will grow toward independence under this mentorship.
Expected Outcomes
- Assigned projects completed on time and within budgetary guidelines
