JOB GOAL: Charter School of New Castle teachers will play an essential role in the growth and development of each of our students. All of our students come from underrepresented ethnic groups and many are performing several grade levels below their current grade level. Our teachers own the responsibility to plan, instruct, assess, lead, mentor, and guide each of our students to academic success overcoming all hurdles and obstacles to ensuring academic success.
OVERVIEW: Founded in 2006, Charter School of New Castle is split between two buildings, a K-4 Elementary School with about 500 students and a 5-8 Middle School on Lukens Drive in New Castle with about 300 students. Charter School of New Castle is a family-focused charter school that prides itself on staff collaboration, and community engagement. At Charter School of New Castle, we provide our students with a well-rounded educational experience, which is intellectually stimulating and builds a foundation for success.
Qualifications
- Recommended to have or be eligible for Certification as an Elementary School Counselor, Behavior Specialist Certificate Program by the State of Delaware or other states.
- Minimum of three years of successful professional experience at the elementary level, or one full year of supervised internship in a K-5 setting, which is part of the graduate degree program in behavior intervention, special education support as such.
- Have the ability to cooperate with staff, parents/guardians, administration and community resource people.
- Have the ability to develop rapport with students.
- Be able to analyze and offer problem-solving techniques.
- Be able to empathize and understand students’ concerns.
- Possess teaching skills to administer developmental guidance curriculum; organizational skills; computer literacy; and knowledge of the developmental guidance philosophy.
The Elementary Behavior Intervention Specialist provides leadership and direction at the school level, working to design, implement, coordinate and evaluate a comprehensive behavior support program. The Intervention Specialist has supported the MTSS process (multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) which is a proactive and preventative framework that integrates data and instruction to maximize student achievement and support students social, emotional, and behavior needs from a strengths-based perspective.
In addition, the Elementary Behavior Specialist works directly and aggressively with identified students to adopt behaviors that substantially increase their academic performance. These students are the lowest achieving elementary students who have been identified in Child Study and involved with as requiring substantial supplemental behavior intervention and support. Under the supervision of the building principal and district representative, the Behavior Intervention Specialist will provide diversified strategies and activities specifically designed for targeted students.
- Assist staff in: defining and measuring behavior; understanding principles of reinforcement; teaching new behavior; implementing strategies for weakening behavior; and identifying antecedents.
- Facilitate team meetings with the identified student’s teachers and parents for the purpose of completing a Functional Behavioral Assessment.
- Work with individual teachers, groups of teachers and/or the entire staff on issues such as: crisis intervention, learning and collaboration issues, and factors that can affect development and implementation of interventions.
