Elementary Music Teacher – Colonial School District

Position: Elementary Music Teacher
Location: To be determined
State Date: As soon as possible
Reports to: Principal
Compensation: Refer to current teacher salary scale on District website
Work Year: 10 months

Position Goal

To create and sustain an educational environment conducive to the fulfillment of the District’s Mission so that maximum positive impact on the education of children can be realized. The teacher is responsible for planning, organizing, and delivering instruction based on the approved curriculum and Common Core State Standards to help students move toward academic proficiency.

Minimum Requirements
  • Eligible or hold State of Delaware Certification as a Music Teacher K-12
  • Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree
  • Student Teaching experience
  • Proficiency in technology, Microsoft Office, children’s educational software, etc.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to issues impacting various cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups
  • Evidence of knowledge regarding practices effective in promoting student learning and increasing achievement
  • Understanding and ability to perform job related tasks
  • Regular attendance is essential
  • Acceptable Criminal Background Report and no entries on Child Abuse Registry in Delaware
  • Ability to teach and serve students
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with school administration and arts faculty to sustain a cohesive Elementary Music program
  • Maintain and organize the school’s music equipment inventory
  • Recruit students for band and choral programs
  • Communicate with families and the community about the music program
  • Organize and schedule winter and spring choral and band concerts
  • Teach multiple grade-level choral groups and select choral and band groups
  • Demonstrate diverse music skills using instruments such as piano, guitar, ukuleles, recorders, drums, etc.
  • Deliver instruction based on the general education curriculum and core state standards
  • Develop weekly lesson plans that contain all required components
  • Utilize appropriate resources, technology, and instructional strategies to supplement instruction and presentations
  • Provide differentiated instruction based on students’ levels and preferred learning modalities
  • Plan and supervise paraprofessionals, volunteers, class projects, field trips, and guest speakers
  • Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time
  • Develop and implement a classroom management system
  • Serve as a positive role model in interactions with students and staff
  • Develop, teach, and review clear classroom rules, routines, procedures, and expectations
  • Follow strategies and requirements for effective behavior management and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training
  • Assess students in assigned certification area
  • Administer informal and formal assessments based on student needs and state regulations
  • Collect and interpret data to modify instruction, content, and report progress to parents and the district
  • Summarize assessment results for IEP development and periodic reviews
  • Design instructional programs based on core curriculum adapted to individual needs
  • Use assessment and progress monitoring data to develop each student’s instructional program
  • Prepare and implement remedial programs for students requiring extra help
  • Collaborate with IEP teams or alternative education review teams for accommodations
  • Incorporate research-based programs and strategies such as Professional Learning Communities, Response to Intervention, etc.
  • Communicate with related service providers, parents, and district staff
  • Follow appropriate protocols for questions, issues, and concerns
  • Inform all parties with legitimate educational interest about meetings, concerns, progress, and other issues
  • Consult with parents, teachers, counselors, specialists, and administrators to resolve behavioral and academic problems
  • Maintain professional relationships with peers, support staff, parents, administration, agency staff, and district personnel
  • Comply with Federal, State, and Local regulations and policies
