The Act 235 Certification is required prior to hire. The Act 120 Municipal Police Officer training is not a substitution for the Act 235.
PurposeResponsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, staff and all UPMC owned and adjacent properties. Enforces UPMC rules and regulations to both employees and the public. Establishes a uniformed police presence by patrolling UPMC hospitals, buildings, grounds and associated areas to deter criminal activity, investigate criminal events, document activities, and take appropriate police action when necessary. Monitors security, fire, and environmental alarms.
Responds to and resolves problems, disputes and unusual circumstances as necessary. Provides customer service to patients, families, visitors and staff to maintain a safe and secure environment. Serves as a first responder to any violent act occurring at a UPMC location. Will be armed with a firearm. Oversees operations of assigned shift and formally leads daily operations of the department, organizing and assigning work, and providing daily instruction to staff regarding specific duties and assignments.
- Handle evidence control pertaining to UPMC initiated criminal investigations.
- Respond to acts of extreme violence at UPMC owned or controlled properties that may require deployment of deadly force as dictated by UPMC policy.
- Support investigations that have system-wide implications.
- Carry, properly handle, and deploy a firearm.
- Issue PA state citations for certain criminal and traffic offenses using PA Justice Network and perform other law enforcement duties as necessary.
- Investigate incidents of unusual circumstances reported by UPMC staff, visitors, physicians and patients.
- Operate as a Security Officer when necessary.
- Appropriately escape problems and concerns to management.
- Transport individuals subjected to criminal arrest and subsequent prosecution.
- Serve legal documents such as arrest warrants, subpoenas, and Protection From Abuse orders.
- Serve as shift supervisor, overseeing operations of assigned shift and leading daily operations.
- Provide support at various UPMC facilities, requiring detailed knowledge of physical layout, site-specific policies and effective interaction with differing management and customer bases.
- Requires high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must have completed one of the following: MPOETC basic training program (Act 120), Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers program, Federal Agency experience (FBI, DEA, Secret Service, U.S. Marshals, VA), Military Police Training, or five years of prior law enforcement experience with annual firearm training and qualification.
- Possess strong interpersonal skills to communicate, diffuse, and handle potential combative situations with persons from all walks of life.
- Maintain psychological fitness to deal with stress and dangerous conflict situations.
- Meet physical fitness requirements to respond to crisis interventions and medical emergencies.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in written format.
- Undergo thorough background and criminal record check.
- Must be available for all shifts.
- Wear bullet proof vest.
- Perform as a security officer when necessary.
- Act 235 with Firearms – successful completion of academic and firearms training modules prior to hire.
- Meet audio and visual standards outlined in Act 235 at time of hire.
- Complete UPMC Police Training upon hire.
- Complete all UPMC mandated weapons and firearms training.
- Pass UPMC Physical Fitness Standard.
- Pass eye and hearing test with appropriate correction.
- Demonstrate ability to perform medium physical demand activities per U.S. Department of Labor guidelines.
- BLS or BLSI, or CPR certification.
- Driver's license.
