Job Summary

The Steam Plant Operator (SPO) conducts day‑to‑day operations and routine preventive maintenance of the power plant. This includes the daily operation, monitoring, and documentation of plant process components and field instruments, ensuring proper operational function. The SPO must understand and monitor normal plant operations, identify and perform corrective actions to keep the system(s) running efficiently, and operate or be willing to learn to operate the PLC‑based control system and field PLC controls.

Duties / Responsibilities
  • Start‑up, operate, shut‑down, and secure equipment under normal and emergency conditions.
  • Train in ARC flash protection, safety protocols, and obtain OSHA qualification for electrical circuit breaker operation.
  • Troubleshoot and perform preventive maintenance and basic mechanical tasks as directed.
  • Conduct routine plant inspections for machinery malfunctions or potential failures.
  • Maintain logs and records of operating conditions and report irregularities.
  • Assist with water chemistry tests and control treatment chemicals within recommended limits.
  • Identify hazardous conditions, notify supervisors, and take corrective action.
  • Monitor plant production equipment and output, including efficiency and related variables.
  • Analyze process variable trends and respond to variances to ensure safe, reliable, and cost‑effective power generation.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance of components associated with ash removal, boiler and fuel systems, valves, pumps, and other system components.
  • Develop operating and maintenance procedures for consistent and safe operation.
  • Assist in scheduled and forced outage maintenance work.
  • Supervise, coordinate, or assist contractors performing work at the facility.
  • Comply with all environmental, health, and safety policies and programs.
  • Maintain records of problems, repairs, and downtime as required.
  • Participate in committees and task forces to improve plant operations.
  • Assist with preventive maintenance and spare parts inventory tracking.
  • Act as a team member and provide guidance to less experienced personnel.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervision.
Education / Experience / Skill Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Technical education or 1–2 years’ experience at a power plant, millwright, or similar mechanical role.
  • Familiarity with PLC‑based controls is a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Basic computer skills, including data entry.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Excellent verbal communication.
  • Proficiency with power and precision tools.
  • Self‑sufficient working ability with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions related to power plant equipment.
  • Commitment to safety practices and procedures.
  • Collaborative team orientation and problem‑solving mindset.
Work Environment
  • Must wear protective equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, respirator masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, high‑voltage gear, and other PPE.
