Position Summary

To repair, maintain, and modify a variety of College vehicles, equipment and tools, and other machinery, campus wide, consisting of approximately 50 motorized vehicles and approximately 60 pieces of equipment and attachments and maintain all related records with minimal assistance.

Typical Schedule
  • Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week, but flexible to meet the department’s needs, including occasional weekends, holidays and/or nights. Will be on call and be required to respond to the college to perform different tasks at various hours of the day and night.
Responsibilities

As an essential employee, you are responsible for the following:

  • Develop, plan, and perform required scheduled maintenance of all vehicles and equipment to include all aspects of motor vehicle maintenance.
  • Installation of attachments and accessories:
    Mechanic is responsible installing and removing mowers, sweepers, spreaders, snow plows, sander, snow blowers, tractor cabs, etc., as seasons and circumstances require. Mechanic must be thoroughly familiar with all attachments and capabilities and evaluate condition as to effectiveness and safety. Mechanic must repair refurbish or report to Maintenance and Grounds Manager when replacement is required. Must be prepared to perform a variety of repairs on a variety of equipment at any time or under poor working conditions.
  • Must develop, coordinate and maintain maintenance records pertaining to repairs, warranties and any other relevant paperwork on all vehicles, equipment, generators, hand/electric, pneumatic tools, etc.
  • Mechanic must be knowledgeable of chemicals used, as to the reaction with each other, and other materials they may come in contact with. Should also be familiar with chemical  and how to respond to spills, fires, etc. Mechanic should be tolerant to a vast variety of chemicals, solvents, fumes and vapors that will be contacted and must be aware of symptoms of over-exposure.
  • Mechanic will always be aware of moral and legal responsibilities in regards to the safety of many students and staff that depend on the safety and reliability of the vehicles and equipment serviced. Mechanic must also be aware that vehicles portray an image of the college.
Position Requirements /Skills/Abilities

High school education, with training in vehicle mechanics or small engine repair desirable. Four to five years of relevant work experience, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired. SAE certified is desirable. Incumbent must possess a broad base of technical knowledge and skills related to vehicle/engine maintenance and repair, including welding and fabrication.

Must be certified to do State inspections and be knowledgeable with diesel engines. Possess and maintain familiarity with trade skills relating to rough carpentry, painting, drywall, insulation, basic plumbing, glass cutting and replacement, and mechanical ability. Able to read, write, and comprehend English, as well as perform basic mathematical computations.

Physical Strength/Endurance
  • Physically able to lift various materials up to 50 pounds on a repeated basis. Any lifting over 50 pounds will be performed with assistance.
  • While performing required job tasks, physically able to repeatedly bend, twist, stand, sit, and kneel.
  • While performing required job tasks, physically able to repeatedly climb stairs, ladders, scaffolding, and aerial lifts.
  • Must be able to lift, move, relocate, set up and dismantle heavy equipment, furniture, supplies, platforms, chairs, etc.
  • Must be able to perform proper snow and ice removal operations as required, to include plowing snow and ice with a vehicle and plow, operate a snow blower, shovel snow, sand/salt to clean all, but not limited to, walkways, roadways, entryways to buildings and roofs; as required or deemed necessary by the Director of Facilities.
  • Possess dexterity abilities required to perform related job responsibilities.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
