We're working with a well-established, design-build construction firm based in Branford, CT that is known for delivering high-quality commercial, industrial, and institutional projects throughout Connecticut. They’re currently looking to add an Estimator to their team—someone with a strong understanding of construction documents, takeoffs, and pricing across a variety of project types. You will work under the direct supervision of the President and Vice President of Estimating and Construction Management to generate and assist in the design and delivery of project proposals to clients.
Key Responsibilities- Demonstrate ability to accurately estimate cost and time needed to complete construction projects while adhering to Company quality standards.
- Seek opportunities to improve the way work is performed and meet business objectives.
- Exhibit flexibility in accommodating shifting work schedules, priorities, processes or methods.
- Demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skills relative to job requirements (including technical know-how, industry developments and best practices).
- Generate and assist in generating project proposals and estimates for both Plan & Spec projects and Design/Build projects including drafting proposals with cost estimates for review by supervisors and establishing specifications and cost estimates in collaboration with pre-engineered building supplier.
- Obtain bids from vendors and subcontractors by specifying materials, identifying qualified subcontractors and negotiating price.
- Transmit addenda and other bid information to subcontractors and suppliers.
- Ensure proper coverage from subcontractors and/or suppliers for the project.
- Show creativity and resourcefulness to gain better pricing from subcontractors and/or suppliers.
- Draft or assist architect in drafting, preliminary structural designs, sketches and architectural drawings according to customer specifications.
- Prepare project purchase orders for review by supervisors.
- May conduct or attend Pre-Bid meetings with owners, architects, sub-contractors and suppliers.
- Review subcontractor/supplier invoices against the estimate and correct any discrepancies.
- Prepare field change orders to be signed by project owner or representative when requested.
- Submit 100% of bids and budgets by the bid deadline – no exceptions.
- Perform related duties, as requested.
Skills and Abilities
- Thorough understanding of the scope for the specific trades assigned. Understanding of how to fit subs and create a Bidder’s List to the size and scope of the project.
- Knowledge of construction concepts and terminology, structural and architectural design, diagrams, sketches, blueprints, etc.
- Knowledge of building codes, construction standards and methodologies, accounting and company building procedures.
- Effective organizational and time management skills, prioritizing and coordinating competing work demands while maintaining composure under pressure. Organize and prioritize workload to meet deadlines.
- Able to act as a self-starter, able to complete work without close supervision.
- Able to understand, apply and use general office equipment including personal computers and software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel and Project.
- Able to effectively report on work status, verbally or in writing as required.
- Able to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure.
Maintain confidentiality of information regarding Company financial matters and cost data. - Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
- Respect the diversity of others, practice teamwork and consensus building skills.
- Resolve customer service issues in a professional and efficient manner.
- Turn over bid documents to the Project Management team and execute or assist with subcontractor or supplier buy outs.
