- Provides crowd control at events and activities
- Monitors designated areas to ensure physical security and authorized access, preventing theft, trespass, vandalism or violations of state statutes or regulations
- Gives directions and routine information to the public
- Participates in evacuation activities in the event of fire, bomb threat or other potential disasters
- Operates firefighting apparatus if needed
- Conducts cruiser or foot patrols as required
- Conducts bicycle patrols when weather permits
- Provides traffic and/or crowd control
- Assesses need for further assistance and arranges timely and appropriate action
- May gather background information and provide threat assessments for high‑risk locations and safety of persons or property, including biological or physical threats
- May respond to emergencies and provide CPR or first aid to injured parties
- May transport or escort couriers, currency, prisoners or persons absent without leave (AWOL)
- May assist in the search for escaped patients or inmates
- May assist State Police in investigations of major criminal acts
- Might be required to maintain building security and perform patrol duties during heightened alert levels under Homeland Security procedures
- Directs traffic and enforces motor vehicle and parking regulations
- Initiates and conducts criminal investigations of violations, suspicious activities or reported incidents within jurisdiction
- Conducts on‑site investigations, questions witnesses, arrests individuals at the scene and issues summonses
- Records information and processes paperwork related to arrests and activity reports
- Arranges surety and non‑surety bond payments or written promises to appear (WPA)
- Serves court testimony as required
- Conducts special programs, projects and services as required
- Processes arrested individuals, including determining charges, fingerprinting, photographing, initiating NCIC checks, searching, removing and inventorying personal belongings and transporting arrested persons to lock‑up
- May conduct safety training, certification and/or recertification courses; may perform minor equipment repairs; may make public presentations on crime prevention and safety; may serve as dispatcher
- Performs related duties as required
- Certification as a law‑enforcement officer in Connecticut pursuant to the Connecticut Police Officer Standards and Training Council regulations
- Applicants must be authorized to work lawfully in the United States by date of appointment
- Candidates for this class subject to selection standards pursuant to section 7‑294‑a‑e of the Connecticut General Statutes and the regulations of the Connecticut Police Officer Standards and Training Council
- Must possess and maintain authority from the Commissioner of Emergency Services and Public Protection to arrest and present any person for any offense within precinct (Connecticut General Statutes 29‑18 and/or 10a‑142)
- Must possess and maintain certification as a law‑enforcement officer in Connecticut (Section 7‑294‑a‑e of the Connecticut General Statutes and the regulations of the Connecticut Police Officer Standards and Training Council)
- Must possess and maintain a valid motor‑vehicle operator’s license
- Incumbents may be required to obtain and retain EMT certification and be qualified to bear arms; may be required to travel and maintain a 24‑hour on‑call schedule
- Must have law‑enforcement certification status – temporary employment may be available pending re‑certification
