Overview

This position supports management of patients requiring Specialty Pharmacy Medications. Responsibilities include providing prior authorization services, insurance benefit investigation, copay assistance, foundation support, and in sourcing the dispensing function of Specialty Medications.
The role requires ordering specialty medications and delivering them to individuals as required.
- Identification and qualification of patients eligible for medication assistance programs and foundations. Interfaces with program administrators for reimbursement assistance programs sponsored by the drug manufacturer. Tracks, documents, and reports cost savings associated with patient assistance drug recovery programs and provides updates to pharmacy management. Provides manufacturer coupons to patients if available.
- Assists pharmacist in all operational activities of the pharmacy to optimize customer satisfaction and maximize profitability. Duties include customer relations, computer and prescription filling, drug orders and inventory, marketing, accounting, and supportive tasks involved with workflow. Knowledge of policies and procedures related to operations, quality assurance, goals, and priorities.
- Customer Service – communicates with patients in a friendly, welcoming manner. Updates accurate demographic information such as address, birthdate, insurance information, and allergies. Sets up appropriate pick‑up or delivery times via telephone or in person. Conducts benefit investigations to find a patient’s insurance if the patient is unable to provide. Emphasises YNHH’s ‘Service for Excellence’ mission. Awareness of non‑negotiables (10/5 rule, no venting, library voices, AIDET, and the Pledge to Service of Excellence).
- Computer and prescription filling – demonstrates proficiency in cross‑functional areas including QS/1, Mckesson ordering, Epic, Epic Specialty, Emdeon, Macro Helix, INFOR, and the DSS website. Awareness of specific programs (MAP, Workers Comp, Columbus House, etc.) and how to process prescriptions within these programs. Regulatory awareness and reporting of medication errors through RL Solutions.
- Drug Orders and Inventory – accumulates information on prescription drugs needed. Places and transmits orders daily into Mckesson. Reviews Macro Helix reports and manages 340B inventory. Reports discrepancies to management and reviews weekly for prescriptions not picked up, returning to stock every 14 days. Reviews back‑ordered items for alternative sourcing. Verifies 340B reports. Fulfills prescription orders timely and accurately. Maintains cleanliness and organization of the dispensary, oversees cycle counts and quarterly review/removal of outdated products.
- Performs other tasks directed by Manager, Outpatient Pharmacy Services, or other pharmacy management team members.
High School Diploma or equivalent required. Additional broad training in fields such as medical office administration, pharmacy technician, social services, or similar vocations generally obtained through completion of an associate’s degree program, or pharmacy technician program.
Experience1–3 years of retail pharmacy technician experience; specialty pharmacy technician experience preferred. Experience with direct patient counseling and excellent customer service skills required.
LicensureActive Connecticut Pharmacy Technician Registration without restrictions and active Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification or equivalent within 12 months of hire.
Special SkillsStrong customer service skills and independent problem solving required. Excellent communication skills and ability to prioritize, multitask, and change tasks frequently and quickly. Knowledge of drug products preferred. Knowledge of medication patient assistance program requirements helpful. Competence with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Access. Patient management expertise.
