The function of the program director is to oversee operations of the Yale New Haven Hospital School of Nurse Anesthesia. The program director is also responsible for the management and mentorship for the students enrolled in the program. The program director is responsible for ensuring compliance with the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs Standards and Guidelines. This individual must have earned a doctorate degree (DNP, DNAP, DNP‑A, DNSc or PhD) from an institution of higher education accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency.

The Program Director functions as a clinical CRNA, a clinical preceptor, and a didactic instructor, at both YNHHSNA and CCSU, our university affiliate.

Responsibilities
  • CRNA CLINICAL REQUIREMENTS
    • Full‑time CRNA position: 80% as Program Director and 20% clinical time.
  • EDUCATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Communication of essential information to academic and clinical faculty, department chairs, and deans.
  • PROGRAM RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Assumption of overall responsibility for all nurse anesthesia program activities.
  • STUDENT DEVELOPMENT AND ENGAGEMENT
    • Design of clinical rotation schedules to maximize student experience and growth.
  • FINANCIAL OVERSIGHT
    • Preparation of a budget plan for the program supporting academic quality.
  • PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
    • Participation in ongoing scholarly endeavors activities including (but not limited to) continuing education, research, publication, and lecturing.
Qualifications Education

The candidate must be a graduate of a nurse anesthesia educational program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Programs (COA). A Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice (DNAP), a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), or a PhD in Nursing Education or Allied Health from an accredited institution of higher education is required.

Experience

Current employment as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. A minimum of 5 years experience in an administrative or clinical leadership role and didactic activities. Experience as an Assistant Program Director for a nurse anesthesia educational program (preferred).

Licensure

Current certification or current recertification by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA) is required. A current unencumbered license or privilege to practice as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist in the state of Connecticut is required by the date of employment. RN and APRN licenses and ACLS certification required.

Special Skills
  • Specialized knowledge of institutional and programmatic accreditation requirements of nurse anesthesia programs.
  • Skilled in curriculum development and the instruction and evaluation of nurse anesthesia students.
  • The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
  • Skilled in effective communication and conflict resolution.
