Primary Functions

This is skilled mechanical work of the journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel drives, heavy equipment, and construction equipment. Employees perform skilled tasks in repair work on trucks, passenger vehicles, and heavy equipment such as pay loaders, excavators, tractors, rollers, low-bed trailers, graders, refuse vehicles, and street sweepers.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities MECHANIC A
  • Requires a CDL with air brake endorsement.
  • Performs skilled mechanical work of a difficult and complex nature in the overhaul and maintenance of heavy equipment; tests, repairs, and reconditions ignition systems, power transmissions, diesel motors, converters, brakes including air brake, hydraulic systems, air conditioning and heating units, and turbochargers.
  • Diagnoses defects in mechanical and electrical components using updated technology and equipment.
  • Inspects, adjusts, and replaces parts of complex gasoline and diesel engines, including valves, pistons, main bearings, transmissions, and power takeoff systems.
  • Assists in repair work requiring welding (electric arc, acetylene, mig, tig, stick) and related fabrication.
  • Completes daily equipment repair logs and directs work of semi-skilled helpers.
  • Performs related work as required.
MECHANIC B
  • Must obtain CDL with air brake endorsement within one year of appointment.
  • Overhauls and repairs light and heavy trucks, gasoline and diesel motors, and other automotive equipment; repairs brakes and transmissions; adjusts clutches; checks wheel alignment; repairs and installs hydraulic controls.
  • Tunes motors using standard testing equipment and performs diversified electrical work on automotive equipment.
  • Conducts road tests to locate defects and verify repairs; uses testing devices such as ammeters, voltmeters, gauges, etc.
  • Assists in inspection and replacement of parts of complex engines and power takeoff systems; assists with welding and fabrication as needed.
  • Completes daily equipment repair logs and performs related work as required.
Education, Qualifications & Experience MECHANIC A
  • Graduation from high school
  • 3 - 5 years of experience as an automotive mechanic at the full trades level, particularly on heavy equipment
  • Must have CDL with air brake endorsement
MECHANIC B
  • Graduation from high school
  • 1 - 3 years of experience as an automotive mechanic at the full trades level
  • Must obtain CDL with air brake endorsement within 12 months of appointment
Knowledge, Experience, Skills & Abilities MECHANIC A
  • Considerable knowledge and skill in diagnosing and repairing defects in automotive and diesel equipment.
  • Knowledge of standard practices and equipment of the automotive mechanic trade.
  • Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines and heavy equipment repair.
  • Knowledge of electrical vehicle maintenance and safety precautions.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and use computer diagnostic tools.
MECHANIC B
  • Knowledge to diagnose defects in mechanical and electrical components and adapt tools and parts to repair problems.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and use diagnostic equipment.
  • Skill in using and caring for automotive repair tools and computer-based diagnostics.
Necessary

Special Requirements MECHANIC A
  • Possession of and ability to maintain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement.
MECHANIC B
  • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid State of Connecticut driver's license.
  • Employee must obtain a CDL with Air Brake Endorsement within 12 months of employment.
  • Upon successful completion of 1 year of service and possession of a CDL, a Mechanic B advances to Mechanic

    A.

Salary, Bargaining Unit & Terms of Employment

This is a "General Fund" non-tested position. The position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 424, Unit 34, United Public Service Employees Union. Hires into this class are not covered by Social Security and contribute 9% of pay to the City pension. Employment is contingent upon a pre-employment background check, physical examination (including drug screen), and a 120-day probationary period.
