Reporting to the General Manager, the incumbent will serve as a technical expert and supervise engineering staff in support of underground mining, surface and maintenance operations.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesLeads all activities involved in mine planning concerning design, installation, construction, and overall analysis of mine projects. Conduct feasibility studies for assigned or proposed projects (including investigation of data, estimation of cost and time requirements, reporting on alternatives, and recommendations on courses of action). Projects may be complex or major in size.
- Provides engineering advice and knowledge to staff on specific day-to-day problems. Provides or sources all necessary technical expertise to identify and resolve reliability issues.
- Evaluates, recommends, and implements changes in production, maintenance, and operating procedures to improve efficiency, effectiveness, and quality at an acceptable cost.
- Leads the design and development of mine modifications and additions. Confers with vendors and contractors on equipment and service purchases for the mine; makes technical engineering recommendations and inspects purchases for the mine
- Oversees the construction, removal, and installation of approved equipment, process, and mine modifications; evaluates progress and performance, and takes or recommends remedial actions. Lead change management initiatives.
- Prepares and submits expense and capital projects for mine-related purchases.
- Keeps all project records and accounting up to date and ensures that all mine drawings are technical drawings are properly maintained.
- Support the design, repair, and verification of mine ventilation systems.
- Assumes a lead role in overseeing the mine’s compliance with Morton Salt’s Shaft and Hoist policy.
- Oversees the rock mechanics program, including monitoring, design, and implementation of ground control measures.
- Allocates resources necessary to implement the EMS
- Ensures EMS policy and procedures are properly communicated to employees, visitors, and contractors.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mining Engineering (or other relevant mining degree with 7+ years of mining experience).
- 5+ years of Underground Mining experience
- Self-starter with the ability to plan, organize, and carry out multiple project assignments at once
- Demonstrated experience in managing projects or portfolios over $5 million.
- Demonstrated experience with designing, installing, or supervising ground control or rock mechanics activities.
- Demonstrated success in leading and developing teams of at least 5 people.
- Demonstrated experience with the design, installation, or measurement of mine ventilation systems.
- Demonstrated experience with the design, installation, or maintenance support of mine hoisting systems.
- Supervisory experience in a mine environment, required
- This Job operates partially in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
- The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel: and reach with hands and arms.
- This job works in an underground mine where temperatures range from 78-100°F. The relative humidity is high in summer and low in winter.
