Police Officer
- Successfully pass Transportation Officer’s Civil Service Exam
Transportation Officers are responsible for transporting and supervising prisoners. Transportation Officers must maintain the safety and security of the holding cells and booking rooms of the New Iberia Police Department and the transportation of prisoners to and from court and other facilities. Transportation Officers will perform their routine work independently.
Transportation Officers will maintain a count of prisoners in the holding cells and booking areas, search prisoners who are brought to the New Iberia Police Department for transportation to the parish jail and other facilities for weapons or contraband, secure all personal property of arrested person, place prisoner in holding cell and secures cell, maintain all necessary safety precautions in and around the prisoner holding area, operate and inspect security devices, and drive a vehicle to transport prisoner(s) to and from hospitals (or other medical facility) or to and from other correctional institutions.
BASICREQUIREMENTS
- Must be at least 21 years old
- Must be a U.S. citizen
- Must have a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent
- Must be physically able to perform the duties of a Transportation Officer
- Pass a background check, including criminal history
- Must possess a valid driver’s license
- Honorable discharge from the military (if applicable)
The annual salary for a Transportation Officer is $31,200.00. P.O.S.T. Certified applicants, who are hired, with at least one (1) year of service with receive $37,200.00 annually, inclusive of State Supplemental Pay at $500.00 per month.
Transportation Officers will receive State Supplemental Pay after one (1) year of service and receiving their P.O.S.T. Certification (Level 1 – Certification for Basic Law Enforcement Peace Officers)
Transportation Officers are paid biweekly and work 84-hours per pay period with weekends and recognized holidays off. Transportation Officers are subject to 24-hour call.
Transportation Officers will receive a 2% longevity pay increase annually. Additionally, Transportation Officers will receive a 2% cost of living increase every five (5) years of employment.
Transportation Officers will be given the opportunity to work overtime details and off-duty security details.
RetirementEmployees with the New Iberia Police Department belong to the Municipal Police Employees Retirement System (MPERS). Retirement eligibility is 55 years old with twelve (12) years of service or at any age with twenty-five (25) years of service.
Employees earn 3 1/3% of their salary per year of employment, allowing employees to retire at (twenty) 20 years with 66 2/3%, at twenty-five (25) years at 83 1/3 %, and at thirty (30) years with 99.9%.
VacationEmployees will receive annual vacation leave after one (1) year of employment.
Police Officers receive sick leave annually with full pay for any illness or injury not brought about by their own negligence or culpable indiscretion.
InsuranceThe City of New Iberia offers low-cost health, dental, and vision insurance to employees and their family.
Additional Cafeteria Plans are offered and are optional to the employee.
HolidaysThe City of New Iberia recognized fourteen (14) holidays per year. Those who work a recognized holiday are paid double time.
Employee Wellness ProgramTogether, Mayor Freddie DeCourt and Chief Todd D’Albor, developed a Mental Health Wellness Program for Police Officers.
Through this program, Police Officers receive up to four (4) confidential visits per year with a Licensed Counselor at little cost to them.
EquipmentUniforms, body armor, and equipment (with the exception of footwear) are provided.
Take home units are assigned to each officer residing within twenty-five (25) miles of City Hall.
