Senior Tax Accountant
Reports to:
Supervisors, Managers, Sr. Managers, Directors and Partners
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Senior Accountants are responsible for utilizing his or her educational background as well as communication and organizational skills for the preparation of tax returns and research. In this role, the Senior Tax Accountant will apply his or her foundational knowledge to understand potential tax issues, gathering client information when necessary for filing, participating in tax planning, recognizing and communicating potential risks, preparing tax accrual work papers and working with tax software applications to complete tax returns for review.
In this role, a Senior Tax Accountant may be charged with supervising and reviewing the work of Staff and Semi-Senior Tax Accountants. When unusual situations and/or complex tax matters arise, they present the pertinent information to the Supervisor, Manager or Partner for resolution of such matters.
Tax Compliance
- Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities, while at the same time, minimizing their tax and reporting burdens. In addition, ensures, compliance with all Firm policies and procedures.
- Responsible to review client documentation, making any necessary book and tax adjustments
- Preparation of 1040, 1065, 1120, 1120s, 990 and other tax returns, including 1120F, 5471 & 5472 international compliance forms
- Review and prepare footnote disclosures in compliance with
- Meets internal deadlines by managing job flow and work schedule to complete assignments, matching client expectations for timely delivery of service
- Preparation of clients’ consolidated trial balances & support using the Firm’s software
- Direct contact with client to obtain necessary information needed for the completion of tax returns
- Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve the position of clients, the Firm, or Firm personnel, e.g., by reducing taxes or expenses or providing non-tax benefits
- May be required to prepare studies of tax implications and offer clients alternative courses of action
- Resolutions of client issues as they arise
- Address IRS and State notices in a timely and efficient manner
- Identifies when research is needed and applies knowledge of the use of internal/external research tools and clearly and concisely reports and analysis
- Supervise Semi-Senior and Staff Accountants
- Provide verbal and written performance feedback to Semi-Senior and Staff Accountants
- Teach/coach associates to provide on the job learning
- Acts as a “Buddy”
Senior Tax Accountants are expected to develop professionally by:
- Actively pursuing the completion of CPA licensing
- Participating in continuing professional education
- Continue to improve technical knowledge
- Keep up with ongoing tax laws changes
- Obtain a working knowledge of the firm’s tax research sources in the firm’s online library
- Working with firm management on in-house training programs, including CPE and other presentations
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
:
Education:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting, meeting requirements to sit for the CPA exam
- Three (3) plus years prior work experience
- Experience with corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships preferred
- Prior basic supervisory experience preferred
- Prior experience preparing and reviewing of tax provisions preferred
- CPA preferred or actively pursuing licensure
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint), and Adobe Acrobat
- Prior experience with tax research databases, such as BNA and RIA, including all tax compliance process software appropriate for this level
- Solid verbal and written communication skills
