Borough of Seaside Heights seeks a full-time “Clerk 1” to assist the Borough Clerk fulfill the core duties of the Borough Clerk’s Office. “Clerk 1” is a classified, entry level NJ Civil Service title. The office is preparing for the August 2026 retirement of our long-time Borough Clerk. The incoming Borough Clerk has worked for Seaside Heights for approximately 10 years, and we anticipate that she will serve as Borough Clerk for at least 15 years.

Thus, for purposes of transparency, we are advising candidates before they submit a resume that there will be no opportunity in the immediate future for promotion or career growth as a municipal clerk. Similarly, in light of other anticipated retirements and steps the Borough is presently taking to plan accordingly, the newly hired “Clerk 1” will have no opportunities for lateral transfer to other departments.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage Open Public Records Act (OPRA) requests; process, retrieve records, file and, when necessary, advertise ordinances, resolutions and the municipal budget; post public notices.
  • Process liquor license and other types of license applications.
  • Attend evening Borough Council meetings and/or similar meetings.
  • Prepare meeting agendas and meeting minutes.
  • Assist with NJ annual election cycles.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Borough Clerk.

New Jersey residency is required. There will be a 90‑day working test period (i.e., probation). Compensation package: starting annual salary $40,000; health benefits (employee + spouse); pension enrollment; and generous paid time off. Non-union position.
