Instructional Paraprofessional Classroom Aide

Summary: This position is responsible to support the teacher in implementing educational programs and services in the agency education and day programs. The Classroom Aide will also participate in the educational program of the students, both in and out of the school building and assure student safety at all times.

Qualifications: Minimum High School Diploma and previous experience working with developmentally disabled ages 3 to 5. Former school Classroom Aide experience a minimum of 1 year.

Major Position Responsibilities
  • Assist the teacher in tending to the basic needs of the students including, but not limited to: feeding, hygiene, and self-care skills including toileting and dressing.
  • Under the direction of the teacher/therapist, provide individual or small group instruction within the educational program.
  • Provide appropriate interventions with the children regarding classroom behavior management and individual behavior management.
  • Assure that each classroom is maintained in a safe and sanitary condition and that all supplies and equipment are available as needed.
  • Serve as a role model for all students in interpersonal interactions and in providing support in student-related activities.
  • Must fully cooperate in any investigations internal, or by a duly authorized external agency, regarding the care and service delivery given to individuals served by this agency.
  • Inform teacher and other appropriate staff re: unusual incidents and/or student needs.
  • Assure that all children are monitored during their daily activities and respond to their needs as necessary.
  • Must be able to maneuver persons in wheelchairs and persons who use other ambulation devices, and at times will be required to physically lift, transfer or otherwise support children with disabilities.
  • Participate in all required training programs and meet all certification requirements of the agency and any related external agency requirements.
  • Develop and maintain positive and cooperative relationships with and among all students, family members, guardians, volunteers and community members including all agency departments, district representatives and other state or local agents.
  • Comply with and support all agency policies and procedures with others in or out of the agency.
  • Expected to consistently implement written behavioral interventions, Individualized Behavior Support Plans (IBSP) strategies and document data collection as required.
  • The agency may assign employees to any work site and to any duties it deems necessary at its sole discretion.
  • This position may require driving an agency vehicle or driving a personal vehicle in pursuit of position responsibilities and will require proof of meeting the agency insurability requirements.
  • Must participate in any investigations regarding the school, agency programs and or individuals serviced when required.
Special Skills and Requirements
  • Must be able to cope with mental and emotional stress related to working with persons who are ill, disabled and/or emotionally upset.
  • Must be able to communicate in English.
  • Must be able to use tools and equipment required.
  • Must have knowledge of elementary math.
  • Must be able to prepare palatable foods that are appetizing in appearance.
  • Must have knowledge of methods and procedures for serving food, principles of sanitation, and principles of safe food handling.
ADA Requirements

This position requires standing and walking up to 80% of a given work day, routine bending and/or stooping, reading, writing, keying information into a computer, and making educated and informed decisions. In the event of an emergency, employee may be asked to assist with lifting and/or transport of individuals serviced when needed. Weight lifting requirements: up to 34 lbs. Ability to push a wheelchair with a total weight of up to 150 lbs.

The agency may assign employees to any duties and to any work site it deems necessary in its sole discretion.
