TITLE:

Special Education Aide

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

High School Diploma; college-level course work in education or related field Minimum experience as determined by the board

Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents and school staff Knowledge of diverse needs of children with disabilities and appropriate special education classroom practices

Required criminal history check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status
6. Substitute teacher certification recommended

REPORTS TO:

Certified classroom teacher, Principal and Director of Student Services

JOB GOAL:

To assist the classroom teacher by working with individual and small groups of disabled students to provide them with physical help and emotional support as needed to gain optimum benefit from the district's special education program.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assist in taking care of the physical needs of the special education pupil. This can include putting on and taking off outerwear, moving from room to room, mealtime support and using the lavatory (this may include diapering, toilet training and toileting).

2. Assists with individualized instruction and works with small groups of students under the supervision of the special education teacher to reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher.

3. Collects data to be used by the child study team

4. Supports in the implementation of behavior intervention plans, as assigned.

5. Assists, where appropriate, in loading and unloading the special education pupil from transportation buses or vans.

6. Completes clerical duties as assigned by the special education classroom teacher.

7. Assists pupils with various projects, crafts, and curriculum tasks.

8.Helps with the supervision of children on field trips planned by the teacher.

9. Assists in playground supervision.

10. Engages children in conversation to encourage language development.

11. Aids physically handicapped children, particularly those who rely upon appliances and prosthetics.

12. Reports any suspicion of child abuse to the Division of Child Protection and Permanency and building Principal or his/her designee.

13. Performs other appropriate duties as assigned by the special education teacher or building Principal directly related to a good learning experience for special education pupils.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Salary and work year to be determined by the Board of Education.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the Board of Education's policy on evaluation of noncertified staff.
