Position Details

Title: Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist

Position Type: 6 month contract with additional opportunity contingent upon performance and continued business need

Job Location: Raritan, NJ

Shift: 1st Shift

Compensation: $38/HR-$42/HR

Key Responsibilities
  • Support communication, awareness, and enforcement of corporate and site-specific IIPP safety protocols.
  • Serve as a knowledgeable resource on OSHA, EPA, and internal safety and environmental policies.
  • Assist with safety reporting, metrics, Gemba walks, and elevating sitewide safety engagement.
  • Participate in incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
  • Conduct routine EHS inspections focused on fire safety, hazardous waste, biological waste, air/wastewater compliance, and more.
  • Partner with employees to assess job hazards and create Job Safety Protocols, procedures, and training.
  • Oversee hazardous waste and biowaste activities, including vendors, pickups, supplies, and regulatory documentation.
  • Lead Safety Committee meetings and drive assigned projects.
  • Coordinate first-aid supply management, emergency equipment inspections, and waste management services.
  • Provide administrative support: permits, training records, compliance calendars, medical surveillance, workers’ comp support, and pandemic-related reporting.
  • Create, update, and deliver site safety training.
  • Collect and input data for utility usage, waste generation, chemical inventories, and regulatory reporting needs.
  • Serve on the Emergency Response Team for medical, chemical, biological, and physical incidents.
  • Exercise authority to stop work for imminently hazardous conditions.
Interactions

Regular communication with employees across Operations, R&D, and other departments, as well as external agencies, contractors, and service providers.

Work Environment

Office-based with regular time spent in laboratory, manufacturing, and warehouse spaces. Approximate daily breakdown: 30% meetings, 40% administrative tasks, 30% site walks, inspections, and risk assessments. Flexible hours, shift support, and emergency response may be required.

Physical Demands

Standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs/ladders, and manual handling of materials up to 50 lbs. Potential exposure to chemical and biological hazards during spill response and waste handling.

Education & Experience
  • Associate degree in Environmental Health, Chemistry, Biology, or related field (required).
  • 2–4 years of EHS experience; medical/biotech/pharma preferred.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local EHS regulations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and communicate using digital and written materials.
  • First Aid/AED/CPR and Hazardous Waste Management credentials preferred.
  • Strong understanding of quality systems (ISO, FDA) and their impact on EHS activities.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
